I am Sonya a licensed mental health counselor. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT) which assists clients in understanding how are thoughts, knowledge, and experiences impact/drive our responses in situations, in every area of life. This approach can improve the overall quality of life of all person's and includes strategies to treat various types of depression, anxiety based disorders, and substance abuse disorders. CBT offers person's in need of support with trauma based disorders as well. Behavioral challenges for youth as well as behavioral pattern and desensitization treatment for every age.
In our first session, we will spend time reviewing necessary information to understand therapeutic alliance, treatment plans, and review assessments to form a preliminary diagnosis. This session will include ensuring all consent paperwork has been signed and you understand duty to warn and consent. This session will allow for you and I to begin to develop a basic knowledge and understanding of treatment options and what you are looking to accomplish in therapy.
Clients are encouraged to provide detailed information and insights to every session. Often there will be conversation followed by problem or symptom identification during session and homework assigned to the problem you have identified and want to address. Sessions are client driven for a portion of time, but guided by myself and will follow the indented treatment provided in the treatment plan. As a therapist who practices CBT I provide structured feedback during session, with direction, and insight all aimed at helping you identify the problem, why it is a problem for you, and how to define the problem so we can develop strategies to address it.
Clients who have been benefited most from my treatment approach are those ages 10-55 who have some insight into their struggles and want assistance in understanding the what, why, and how prior to finding the answer to managing their mental health. Previous clients showed increased self-awareness, increased understanding of mental health, gained strategies and resources to managing symptoms of mental illness, were able to address and understand how their cognitions impact their behavioral, and have reported less symptoms and improved quality of life. CBT works for people of all ages and is able to assist all in life and those needing assistance with anxiety related, trauma related, depression related, developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, behavioral challenges, substance abuse, and eating disorders.
CBT is used to help people learn how our thoughts impact what we do, say, how and why, we respond to different situations, people, environments, and the way we do. Using particular strategies CBT can be used to help us people more productive under stress, be less nervous in social situations, be more confident in our ability to get through stressful or challenging moments, For example, if you experience intense anxiety when faced with social situations, desensitization and visualization can reduce the level of anxiety experienced and increase person's ability to socialize with less anxiety to non at all.
