New to Grow
I've been a licensed counselor since 2008. I've worked with a broad range of clients: kids, adults, older people, people with very serious issues to more transient problems. What I like most about counseling is knowing that I might connect with someone that no one else could, or in a way that no one else would have, and help them to improve their life in a meaningful way.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
I think finding out what has brought someone to counseling is always a good place to begin. Understanding someone's priorities and circumstances, what they've tried and how successful it's been, looking at the resources they have to deal with things, it offers a lot of insight into someone's life in a pretty short amount of time. Making connections, asking questions and sort of deconstructing things to get a better understanding of the bigger picture, then looking at plans, things to work on over the coming week and iterating through that process. That's the gist of what I do!
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
Well, I'm probably too humble to say that I'm relatively intelligent, analytical, and that I possess an offbeat sense of humor that some clients really enjoy. Plus, I have the self-awareness not to deploy that when clients don't appreciate it. :)
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
I think I work best with clients who enjoy considering different perspectives. Working through life transitions, dealing with relational conflict, overcoming emotional dysregulation... I think they're all things I enjoy helping people work on. I think if someone is accountable and looking at how thing can change, rather than how to make other change, there's potential for success.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
It's always felt natural to me to look at how life events can inform out thoughts and feelings, and how we respond to new situations, so when I work with clients, I like to try to point out these kinds of potential connections and then work to try to retrain responses with sustainable responses that create better outcomes for clients.
