Veronica Thornton
I am a licensed professional counselor in Washington, D.C., trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. I use a holistic therapeutic approach to work with you to create new strategies for change and help you learn how to transform your mind to live a renewed life. Today I specialize in working with persons who have experienced childhood trauma, sexual abuse, complex grief, disruptive family relationships/attachments, spousal abuse/divorce, racial and cultural trauma, church hurt, or spiritual abuse.
First session
You do not have to arrive with everything figured out. You simply need a willingness to begin where you are. Together, we can create a therapeutic space where your experiences, culture, values, and faith can be understood as meaningful parts of your story. Sessions always start with a brief check-in about your life, followed by identification of the trauma related processing work that you would like to complete. No two sessions are exactly alike, so come ready to share about whatever is on your mind and we will work from there.
Strengths
My approach is client-centered and adaptive, prioritizing your real-time needs in every session. We begin with a brief check-in to ground ourselves before identifying or revisiting a specific trauma target. Together, we assess what will serve you best in that moment—whether that means calming techniques, verbal processing, or utilizing bilateral stimulation to process trauma. The remainder of the session is dedicated to thorough reprocessing, ensuring you leave feeling fully stabilized, supported, and equipped with targeted practice or reflection for the space between sessions. My sessions are a collaborative partnership focused on uncovering the root of your challenges so true healing can begin. Grounded in empathy, warmth, and compassionate honesty, my approach ensures you walk away from every session with actionable insight and clarity. As your clinician and champion, I help you uncover the truth of your experience while guiding and cheering you on toward lasting hope and self-awareness.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is seeking a trauma-informed approach and is open to the possibility of using EMDR therapy to support meaningful and lasting change. I welcome clients from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, and family backgrounds. I am also open to thoughtfully incorporating Christian faith into the therapeutic process. Faith integration is only by request and never imposed.
Treatment methods
Faith based therapy
Faith-based therapy is a therapeutic approach that works to integrate Christian faith and spiritual principles into the therapeutic process when this is something you would like to explore. Faith and spirituality can be meaningful sources of hope, identity, strength, and healing in counseling. And can be very helpful to understand the difference between personal faith and spirituality versus traditions or cultural religion. I work to help anyone experiencing church hurt, or religious manipulation, or spiritual abuse. Not every session will be focused on faith or spirituality. Rather, we create space to explore how your beliefs, values, relationship with God, and spiritual experiences intersect with the challenges you are facing. Every session is tailored to your needs. Some sessions may include prayer, Scripture, spiritual reflection, or other faith-centered practices alongside evidence-informed counseling approaches.
