Karen Fulwood
am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 24 years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. I treat a broad range of mental health conditions, including ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), depression and other mood disorders, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), PTSD, social anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, and other thought disorders. My approach is centered on meeting you where you are. I believe healing happens through a collaborative partnership, where we work together to understand your unique experiences, identify your goals, and develop a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout your mental health journey. The most life-changing experience I have faced was the loss of my 15-year-old daughter to suicide in October 2025. While I would never wish that pain on anyone, it has deepened my empathy and strengthened my commitment to supporting individuals and families facing mental health challenges. I am passionate about helping people find hope, healing, and resilience through compassionate care and evidence-based treatment. Whether you are seeking help for the first time or continuing your mental health journey, I consider it a privilege to partner with you on your path toward wellness.
First session
Welcome! I'm glad you've taken the first step toward improving your mental health and overall well-being. Your first appointment is designed to help me get to know you as a whole person—not just your symptoms. During this comprehensive evaluation, we will complete a thorough psychiatric history and medical history, review your current concerns, discuss any previous treatments, medications, and relevant family history, and perform an appropriate assessment to better understand your needs. Most importantly, we'll have an open conversation about where you are today and where you would like to be. Together, we'll identify your goals and develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your needs and values. Medication is only one part of treatment. If medication is appropriate, we'll discuss the benefits, risks, possible side effects, and expected outcomes so you can make an informed decision. My goal is to find the medication management approach that is safest and most effective for you. We will work together as a team, making adjustments along the way as your needs change. I believe in meeting you exactly where you are. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, mood disorders, or another mental health concern, you'll be treated with compassion, respect, and without judgment. Healing is a journey, and you don't have to walk it alone. I look forward to partnering with you as we work toward helping you feel your best and achieve the quality of life you deserve.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is that I bring both professional expertise and genuine life experience to every patient encounter. With more than 24 years of experience in psychiatric care, I have helped individuals of all ages navigate a wide range of mental health conditions. I also understand that mental health is personal. Anxiety and depression have affected my own family, giving me a deeper appreciation for the challenges many people face every day. While everyone's journey is unique, these experiences have strengthened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate, individualized care. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where you feel comfortable sharing your story. I will listen carefully, treat you with dignity and respect, and never judge you. I believe every person deserves to be heard, understood, and supported. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we will identify your goals, explore treatment options, and develop a plan that fits your needs, values, and lifestyle. I see our relationship as a partnership, where your voice matters and your input is essential. Above all, I want you to know that there is hope. No matter where you are in your journey today, I am committed to meeting you where you are and walking alongside you as we work toward healing, growth, and lasting wellness.
Ideal clients
work with individuals across the lifespan, including children, adolescents, and adults, and welcome clients from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of mental health concerns. Rather than focusing on a specific “ideal client,” I meet each individual where they are and tailor treatment to their unique needs, circumstances, and goals. I provide care for individuals experiencing anxiety, mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder, thought disorders including schizophrenia, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, trauma, stress, behavioral concerns, relationship challenges, and other mental health conditions. My practice primarily focuses on psychiatric medication management, with psychotherapy incorporated into treatment when appropriate. I take a collaborative, individualized approach to care, with the goal of helping each person achieve greater stability, functioning, and overall well-being.
