New to Grow
Hello, I am Jerry. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Indiana and Florida. I have been providing substance abuse and therapy services since 2010, and licensed since 2016. I graduated with my Masters in Counseling and Human Services with an emphasis in Mental Health Counseling in 2012. I am also a Registered Nurse and work in an Emergency Psychiatry unit in Louisville.
During our first session, we will discuss informed consent, risks and benefits of therapy, and a general overview of your life (biopsychosocial assessment). I’m going to ask you a lot of questions (a lot) so that I can generate a functional understanding of what your needs are and what outcomes you want. We will start working on a treatment plan that will help to guide your treatment and measure progress toward reaching your goals.
The way I approach therapy could be considered different than most. I see it as us building trust with each other so that we can hold each other accountable. Having the ability to be open and honest with each other and calling out what needs to be said. Not sugar coating the truth, but being real and vulnerable. Celebrating our successes and learning from our failures. The therapeutic relationship we develop is 85% of your treatment. The other 15% is the approach we use to help you reach your goals.
I like to work with anyone who is ready to lace up their boot straps and get dirty. Therapy is about exploring who you are, the way you respond or react, and learning how to gain control of what creates dysregulation for you. We work together to learn how to communicate our needs to those around us in a healthy manner, implement healthy coping skills to mange dysregulation, and to see the world through a different lense than we have in the past. If you’re willing to put in the work and effort to make changes to better your life, then I’m here for you. You know your self and your needs better than anyone else, I’m here to guide and challenge you to be the best version of yourself self.
CBT is the primary framework I utilize, however other modalities may be implemented. We work on trying to retrain your brain to look at stressors through a different lense to decrease the dysregulation you experience.
I incorporate DBT as a foundation to building healthy coping skills and create a dichotomy in your thought process.
EMDR is used later in treatment for those with unresolved trauma.
Solution focused is looking at significant stressors you are currently experiencing and how to resolve them.
A form of CBT assisting those with complex trauma retrain how you view negative events do decrease negative responses.
