Jamie Mahaffey
I have a strong passion to help restore relationships (specifically marriages) and the issues that plague them. My love of treating mental health concerns in a psycho-therapeutic way allows for me to empower my clients to make healthy decisions for a better life. I believe that I am called to this field and hope to challenge irrational belief patterns that keep you stagnant and unproductive by concurrently identifying your strengths, building insight to make better life choices. I have been working in the field of Mental Health since 2006. I have two Masters in Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and is trained as a Marriage and Family Therapist. I have diverse work experiences with children and adults in individual/couples/family/group counseling, crisis intervention, diagnostic and trauma assessments, medical social work, child advocacy/abuse prevention, and psychotherapy.
First session
The first session will include a through assessment of what clients identify as goals for therapy, areas of concern and overview of the clients' mental health history and services. This assessment helps me as the therapist lay out a treatment plan that is individualized for each client. Clients can come prepared to share what they are hoping to gain from the therapy experience and to discuss problem areas that hinder them from those life goals.
Strengths
Better life choices lead to changed behaviors and better relationships with others. I desire to assist you in reaching your optimal health by exploring yourself and challenging you in order to gain insight to make healthy life decisions. I believe that each person has purpose and value and through exploration of family history, current relationship dynamics and life experiences, one can discover who they truly are and gain freedom to be an autonomous fully-functioning individual who is safe and authentic in one's own strength. In doing so, this will require a therapeutic relationship of collaboration, accountability, and honesty.
Ideal clients
Client who desire to focus on addressing negative core beliefs and stinking thinking that keep them stuck in unhealthy cycles of trauma, addiction, toxic relationships, etc. and learn how to build self-awareness to make better life choices and improve overall mental health. I come from a perspective of Bowen Family Systems to explore trans-generational patterns and use Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance Commitment Therapy principles to assist in building this awareness. CBT and ACT also provide practical tools such as mindfulness, challenging negative self-talk, to build healthy coping. When working with couples and families in the past, I like to add-on Emotionally Focused therapy to build empathy and emotional connection among participants.
