New to Grow
As a therapist I provide a safe, supportive space where individuals can explore their thoughts, emotions and life experiences without judgment. I typically use a combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and/or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), but always adjust my practice based on the client's needs. I work collaboratively with clients to help them build insight, develop effective coping strategies and create meaningful and lasting change.
My first session (first few sessions really) is all about building rapport and getting to know each other. It is difficult to meet a stranger and pour your heart out to them. I take time to get to know you and answer any questions or concerns you may have. I will go through the intake forms you filled out to talk more in depth about your answers and I will take time to understand your goals for therapy.
My greatest strength is that my first goal is to help you feel comfortable. It is much easier to talk about difficult things when you feel safe and comfortable. I make sure to check in with my clients to see how they are feeling about the process and move at a pace that is comfortable for them. I have a very client-driven approach and believe that meaningful change is most effective when it aligns with the client's own goals, values, and readiness.
My ideal client is someone who is ready to engage in the therapeutic process. Someone who is open to self-reflection and personal growth as well as motivated to better understand themselves. This will include such things as exploring emotions and learning practical tools for managing stress, relationships, and daily challenges.
I use DBT to help clients with emotional regulation, interpersonal conflict and to reduce self-destructive behaviors. I teach mindfulness and acceptance strategies to help improve emotional regulation difficulties and reduce harmful patterns of behavior.
I use CBT to help clients identify and change unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress and mental health challenges. This can involve exposure exercises, activity scheduling, relaxation techniques/coping strategies, and reframing or challenging cognitive distortions.
I have taken a special interest in how trauma effects the brain. I recognize how past trauma may influence a client's emotions, behavior, relationships, and worldview. When working with a client who has suffered a trauma I make sure to create a safe space and work to build a trusting relationship.
