Jacob Templeton

LCSW10 years of experience

Hi, my name is Jacob Templeton. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I bring 15 years of experience working in mental health including 9+ years in direct clinical counseling. During that time, I've helped thousands of people from diverse backgrounds including many first responders. I provide telehealth video therapy to adults and older adolescents living in Arizona, Minnesota and Wisconsin. I am passionate about helping people heal trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic stress and relationship issues. Outside of my private practice, I love spending time with family and friends, playing sports, watching football, running outside, improving my holistic health and volunteering. If you’re ready to begin your healing journey, feel free to reach out to get started.

First session

Oftentimes, people show up to their first counseling appointment worrying and wondering how it will go. By the end of the first session, most people feel relieved and optimistic about getting started. During your first session, I’ll ask thoughtful questions to gain a clear understanding of who you are and what brought you into counseling. We will work together to create goals that will help you build the life you want. You’ll leave the first session with supportive insights and practical tools you can start using right away!

Strengths

I love getting to meet new people and hear their stories. It is an honor to come along side people and help them learn new insights that can improve their life or to hold space when they are going through a difficult time and simply need to process. I love helping people heal trauma, strengthen thought patterns, have more harmony with emotions, improve their relationships or go deeper spiritually. If we are working to heal past traumatic memories, we can do much of that within our sessions. For everything else, I believe having a counselor can be similar to a personal trainer at the gym. I will show you the insights that can help reach your goals. If you put in the reps in between sessions, you can begin to see the changes you've been hoping for. I also created a counseling toolkit with over 100 articles and videos to improve your mental, physical, relational, spiritual and financial wellness and all of my clients get free access to it.

Ideal clients

One of the things I enjoy most about being a counselor is getting to know people from all walks of life and supporting them through different seasons of life. While my primary areas of specialization include healing from trauma, depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and relationship challenges, my 15 years in the mental health field have given me experience helping clients navigate many other concerns as well. I believe the greatest growth often occurs when clients actively engage in the counseling process by learning new skills, gaining insight, and intentionally applying what they discover between sessions. At the same time, I understand that there are seasons when people simply need a safe, supportive space to express their thoughts, process difficult experiences, and feel heard. My goal is to meet each client where they are and provide the support they need to move toward healing and lasting change.

Treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is great for helping people better accept inevitable uncomfortable emotions, to unhook from unpleasant thoughts, to clearly define their most fulfilling life and to help them create a clear plan for living that out.

Christian Counseling

If a client comes in requesting Christian Counseling, that is something I offer. If a client comes in and is not Christian or does not want that incorporated, I do not incorporate it. For those who prefer this to be incorporated, I like to ask clients how they want this incorporated based on their comfort level. Some people prefer to have biblical wisdom and principles incorporated into our discussions and others may want me to pray for them at the end of session.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is really good for learning deeper insights into thinking and behavioral patterns, understanding how your inner world is connected and learning systematic ways to improve these things so that you feel better emotionally.

EMDR

Sometimes the symptoms we experience today are connected to painful experiences from our past that have never been fully processed. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a highly effective therapy that helps people heal from traumatic memories so they no longer have the same emotional impact. It is especially effective for single-incident trauma and can be done just as effectively through secure video sessions. Over the years, I have seen many clients experience significant healing from PTSD and other trauma-related symptoms as they processed and resolved distressing memories through EMDR.

Gottman method

While I don't provide couples counseling, many of my one-on-one clients want insight into improving their relationships. I will often incorporate Gottman method wisdom to help people learn better ways to engage in communication, conflict management and connecting.
