Hello, my name is John Kelly, and I am a licensed professional counselor committed to helping individuals navigate life’s challenges, heal from difficult experiences, and create meaningful change. I provide a supportive, compassionate, and judgment-free environment where clients can feel heard, understood, and comfortable being themselves. My practice focuses on helping clients work through anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, and personal growth. I believe that our past experiences can have a powerful impact on how we think, feel, and relate to others, but they do not have to define our future. My goal is to work alongside each client to build resilience, develop healthy coping skills, and create a more fulfilling and balanced life.

First session

When clients leave a session with me, I want them to feel something they may not have felt when they walked through the door: heard, understood, and hopeful. I want clients to feel that they were able to speak openly without being judged, that their experiences matter, and that they don't have to carry everything on their own. Even when we're discussing difficult experiences, including trauma, anxiety, depression, relationships, or major life changes, I want clients to leave with a greater sense of clarity and understanding about themselves. I also want them to leave with something they can take with them beyond the counseling session—whether that's a new perspective, a coping strategy, a deeper understanding of their emotions, or simply the reassurance that they are capable of getting through what they're facing. My goal isn't for every session to magically make everything better. Real change takes time. Instead, I want each session to create a small sense of progress: “I understand myself a little better. I have something I can work on. Maybe things can get better.” Most importantly, I want clients to know that they don't have to have everything figured out before coming to counseling. They just need a willingness to begin. My hope is that they leave feeling a little lighter, a little more confident, and with the belief that they have the ability to move forward.

Strengths

What makes my approach to counseling unique is my belief that therapy should feel like a genuine human connection. I don't want clients to feel like they are simply coming into an office, answering questions, and being given a list of things they are supposed to change. I want therapy to be a place where clients feel comfortable being honest, vulnerable, and completely themselves without fear of judgment. My approach is conversational, compassionate, and practical. I take the time to understand each person's individual story, including the experiences, relationships, challenges, and circumstances that have shaped who they are today. I recognize that everyone comes into counseling for different reasons, and I believe treatment should be tailored to the individual rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. I also believe that understanding where our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors come from can be an important part of creating lasting change. Whether a client is struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, stress, or a major life transition, I work collaboratively with them to develop greater self-awareness and practical coping strategies that can be used in everyday life. My goal is for clients to leave sessions with more than just something to think about. I want them to gain insight, develop useful tools, recognize their strengths, and feel empowered to take steps forward. Ultimately, I don't see my role as telling clients how they should live their lives. I see myself as walking alongside them, providing support, perspective, and encouragement while they work toward the life they want. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I believe meaningful change begins with feeling heard, understood, and accepted.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is someone who is ready to better understand themselves, work through the challenges they are facing, and take meaningful steps toward positive change. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, life transitions, or simply feel stuck and unsure of what comes next. I especially enjoy working with individuals who may have spent a long time putting other people’s needs first and are now recognizing that they need to take care of themselves as well. Many people become so focused on work, family, relationships, and responsibilities that they lose sight of their own emotional needs. Counseling can provide an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and begin reconnecting with who they are and what they want. I also enjoy working with clients who appreciate a conversational and collaborative approach. You don't have to come into therapy knowing exactly what you want to talk about or have everything figured out. Sometimes the most important place to begin is simply by saying, “I'm struggling, and I don't know what to do.” My ideal client is not someone who has everything together. In fact, I believe counseling can be most valuable when life feels messy, overwhelming, or uncertain. I want to work with people who are willing to be honest, explore difficult experiences, and consider new perspectives while moving at a pace that feels comfortable for them. Above all, I want clients to know that they don't have to navigate difficult seasons alone. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment where clients can feel heard, understood, and empowered to create meaningful change in their lives.

Treatment methods

EMDR

I incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into my practice when clinically appropriate, particularly when working with clients who have experienced trauma or distressing life experiences. I use EMDR within a structured, collaborative therapeutic process to help clients safely process difficult memories, emotions, and beliefs that may continue to affect their current thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. My approach to EMDR is individualized to each client's needs, readiness, and treatment goals. I integrate EMDR with other therapeutic interventions rather than viewing it as a one-size-fits-all approach. Through the reprocessing process, clients can develop greater awareness of how past experiences may be influencing their present lives while working toward more adaptive and balanced responses. I also place strong emphasis on preparation, emotional regulation, and establishing a sense of safety before engaging in trauma processing. My goal is for clients to feel supported and in control throughout the process while developing skills they can use both inside and outside of therapy. For clients who are appropriate for EMDR, I have found it to be a valuable component of treatment for addressing unresolved trauma, reducing distress associated with difficult experiences, and supporting meaningful emotional and behavioral change.
