Hello My name is Michelle Garrett, and I am a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have been a nurse for over 30 years and have been working in the mental health field for many years, with experience in both outpatient and hospital-based settings. My background includes providing care to individuals with a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and trauma-related conditions.

First session

Our first session is typically about 60 minutes. During this time, we focus on getting to know you by reviewing your history, discussing your current concerns, and identifying your goals for treatment. We will also talk through treatment options, which may include medications, and review the potential risks and benefits. There will be time to answer any questions you may have so you feel informed and comfortable with the plan moving forward. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter, around 30 minutes. These visits focus on ongoing care, including working through specific concerns, building practical coping tools, and adjusting medications as needed. The goal is to provide problem-focused, solution-oriented support to help you make steady progress.

Strengths

I approach care with a focus on collaboration, respect, and individualized treatment. My goal is to create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where you feel comfortable discussing your concerns. I work with each client to develop a treatment plan that may include medication management, supportive therapy, and practical strategies to improve daily functioning and overall well-being. I understand that seeking help can be a difficult step, and I strive to make the process as comfortable and straightforward as possible. I look forward to working together to support your mental health and personal goals.

Ideal clients

Clients with depression or anxiety working on managing life stressors and willing to work to make positive changes not just someone seeking a medication to fix their life. Adult population could be young or old but willing to adhere to treatment plan and work on skills to build their tool box along with medications to help alleviate some of their symptoms so they can make these changes.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I do a therapeutic medication check always including some type of therapy or education. With CBT I start out building a therapeutic relationship of trust. I ask the client what is one or two things with your mood or life you would really like to work on. I mainly do 30 min appts (occasional 40min- 1hr) so we will address medications, but I also listen and then reflect on the problem/behavior. We work together to begin to understand how to identify and challenge negative thoughts, feelings, and actions and learn new skills to use to help make that change.

Motivational Interviewing

Sometimes my clients do not even recognize a behavior is causing a lot of their distress. We work on recognizing that and how it effects them in life. I look at readiness and where they are at on the change model. Slowly engaging and working on the clients motivation and commitment to make a change.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I use a little bit of DBT in sessions if clients are struggling and often give copies of workbook pages from Marsh Linehan guided book using tools like Dearman letter or checking the facts to help build my clients tool box for success in difficult situations.
