Sherri Humphries
I have worked for many years as a counselor and therapist. I believe that everyone has a story; and every story should be valued and deeply understood. I am passionate about helping individuals, couples and families unpack their stories and move toward healing from individual hurts and broken relationships. I named my practice Strength for Living because the journey sometimes gets too difficult to manage alone; we sometimes need help to find strength to keep moving forward. I use a variety of treatments to meet clients where they are, and help them move toward hope and recovery. Trauma-informed, evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and emotionally focused therapy can help you take a deeper look at your experiences and the patterns that interrupt your relationships with others. Taking a deep look at your own painful experiences can be hard work! Digging into your thoughts and feelings can be scary. It can also be your first step toward healing and restoration. If you are suffering, don't continue to suffer alone. Strength for Living is here to offer a safe place to begin your journey toward healing.
First session
Reaching out for help takes courage. My goal in the first session is to create an atmosphere that feels emotionally safe, and welcoming. I want to communicate to you right from the start that you are worthy to be seen, heard and deeply understood. I will ask you a few questions to get an understanding of why you are seeking help and then provide information about how I engage in therapeutic practice. And of course, I will answer any questions you have about treatment. Other than that, I will give you space to tell me what you want me to know, and we will move forward from there to help you reach your identified treatment goals.
Strengths
My approach tends to be integrative; I use a variety of treatment interventions to meet clients where they are. I can utilize confrontational interventions if necessary, however, my natural personality tends to hold space for whatever it is you are struggling with and help you unpack the story that you are willing to tell, as you are willing to tell it. I use a systemic approach when working with couples, families, and individuals. Human beings do not exist in isolation; our hurts, pains, joys and sorrows impact us internally (intrapersonally) and also shape our interpersonal relationships. A systemic focus helps provide a more holistic view of both suffering and healing; this includes considering culture, spirituality, family of origin, generational trauma, early life experiences, personal strengths, natural support systems and resiliency. Most importantly, what I bring to every session is a genuine posture of curiosity; a deep desire to see you, know your story and understand your experiences and desire for change.
Ideal clients
I am open to working with all kinds of clients. I am also very passionate about helping individuals heal from issues related to trauma, grief and loss. These issues tend to have a significant impact on one's sense of self, and sense of belonging. They also deeply impact a person's relationships with others. I believe we often experience our deepest hurts in the context of our closest relationships. We can also experience deep healing and restoration within those relationships. Individual therapy, couples therapy and family therapy all provide great opportunities to move toward healing. The curveballs that life throws at us can sometimes leave us unsteady on our feet. I value helping individuals and families adjust to life changes, make new meaning of their experiences and discover new purposes in life as they continue on their journey.
Treatment methods
Christian Counseling
I am always willing to utilize Christian techniques with Christian clients who are interested in integrating their Christian beliefs with psychological theory.
Attachment-based
Attachment-based treatment methods help to identify and understand a person's early relationships with primary caregivers and how those relationships have shaped the person's expectations about relationships and influenced their attachment needs.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is an evidenced-based treatment that works well with many issues including, anxiety, and depression. CBT is valuable in helping a person better understand the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. It also helps to uncover deep rooted beliefs and patterns that are negatively impacting the individual's daily functioning.
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma Informed Care helps to understand what has happened to the client and how the event, experience, and effect of trauma impacts the individual, couple or family.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT is a trauma-informed relational treatment method that works well with couples. It focuses on attachment needs and longings and helps couples learn to address their emotions and needs in the here-and-now. It also helps identify negative relational patterns that are getting in the way and preventing the couple from maintaining an emotionally safe attachment with one another.
