Maura Furness
Hello ! I am Maura Furness, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing mental health services in California. As a psychotherapist, I work with people to grow and heal in the face of life's challenges. I work with adults and teens to address symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression relationship challenges, grief and loss, and life transitions.

First session
In our first session we will explore your current symptoms and challenges, I will gather information about your past experiences and what things have helped and not helped for you in the past. We will identify your strengths and the areas of your life you would like to improve. From there we will create a plan together for your future treatment and goals. And, as always, I will answer your questions so we can get to know each other and begin to build a trusting partnership to support you.
Strengths
In the last 7 years I have worked with clients of all ages and life circumstances. In this time I have developed a straight forward approach to working with my clients. I believe you have inherent strengths and transformational healing abilities no matter how much pain or suffering you may experience. I utilize holistic mindfulness practices so you can integrate in your body the growth and realizations you have in session. I succeed in helping my clients feel more trusting of themselves and their abilities to face the challenges of life with confidence and support.
Ideal clients
I enjoy working with young adults who are transitioning to being an "adult" and building a meaningful life in the face of uncertainty and change. I enjoy working with people who have hit a dead end and find the old ways of coping with life don't work any more. Helping them to move through "stuckness" to find new skills and motivation to face life. I enjoy working with people who are ready to heal from past hurts and traumas to reconnect with their innate sense of wholeness. I enjoy working with people who are experiencing relationship challenges and want to learn better ways to resolve conflict. I enjoy working with people who, regardless of past diagnosis or treatment, want to build a trusting therapeutic relationship and are curious about all the ways they can grow and heal no matter what they have been told in the past.
Treatment methods
Attachment-based
I utilize an attachment based approach in my work with clients that focuses on the impact of relationships and connection on a clients current and past experiences. In addition, I work to create a safe and secure connection with my clients that allows for us to explore how to relate in a healthy and meaningful way which can benefit client's relationships outside of session.
Strength-Based
I have utilized a strengths based approach in my treatment for the past 6 years. By focusing on a client's strengths and resilience we can identify the innate skills and abilities you possess to address any current challenges and goals. This empowering approach helps to shift the focus from "what is wrong with me" to "what skills do I have and want to learn".
Mind-body approach
I regularly utilize a Mind- Body approach in my therapy work and I find that clients benefit greatly from learning to connect with their physical body experience in order to understand their personal response to stress and triggers. Building self awareness of your bodies own nervous system can empower you to understand what influences how you think and feel and what you can do about it.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
For the past 6 years I have utilized a mindfulness based therapeutic approach with my clients. This includes mindfulness based stress reduction meditation practices as well as guided practices to help clients learn mindfulness skills and coping strategies to use outside of sessions.
