Karl Schaefer
I am a retired first responder and New York State Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with an MSW from Adelphi University (2007). My therapeutic approach is client-centered and incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and psychoeducation.
Helping You Navigate Life's Challenges, Break Unhealthy Patterns, and Move Toward Positive Change.
I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, relationship and family conflict, trauma, and men's issues. By combining my clinical training, first responder experience, and personal life experiences, I provide a compassionate, practical, and supportive environment. I believe meaningful change begins with feeling understood, supported, and empowered to take the next step toward a healthier life.
First session
Our first session will focus on completing an initial assessment to better understand your concerns, personal history, and current challenges. Together, we will begin identifying areas of conflict or difficulty, explore your goals, and determine the therapeutic approach that best meets your needs. My goal is to create a comfortable, supportive environment where we can develop a plan to help you move forward.
Strengths
Through my personal and professional experiences, I have learned the importance of reflecting on our life choices and recognizing when change is needed. Life is constantly moving, and I believe we must be active participants in shaping our future rather than remaining stagnant and watching life pass us by. Taking time to examine our decisions, challenge old patterns, and embrace new possibilities allows us to grow, gain perspective, and move toward a more fulfilling life. Sometimes the most important step is simply finding the courage to make a change.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who is open to self-reflection, willing to explore life's challenges, and motivated to make positive changes. I enjoy working with individuals who may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about their next steps, but recognize that something in their life needs to change. Whether struggling with anxiety, depression, substance use, relationship difficulties, trauma, or major life transitions, I strive to help clients identify unhealthy patterns, gain a better understanding of themselves, and develop practical tools to move forward. You don't have to have all the answers or know exactly where to begin. You simply need to be willing to take the first step toward change.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I prefer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because it helps individuals understand how their thoughts and behaviors influence their feelings and decisions. I believe in helping clients recognize negative patterns, develop healthier ways of thinking, and find practical solutions to life's challenges. My goal is to empower clients to take an active role in making positive changes and improving their overall well-being.
