Evan Harbaugh
I have experience working with a variety of people and diagnoses. I have specific training with individuals who have an HIV/AIDS diagnosis as well as those who identify as LGBTQ+ or who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. I have worked in a variety of settings including a Center City Philadelphia outpatient practice and a suburban crisis center.
First session
Usually, therapy can be described as having a conversation. It might be a hard conversation to have at times, and sometimes, you may come away from therapy with both good and difficult feelings. However, therapy is something that, over time, is going to help you deal better with your mental health and your life.
Strengths
Empathy: I always try to see things from my client's perspective. I always endorse being kind to oneself especially during a troubling time. Reliability: I will never leave someone hanging without proper notice. I communicate and am someone my clients can rely upon and confide in. Experienced: I have treated a range of disorders successfully. I know how to build a rapport and utilize that relationship to help benefit the client's mental health.
Ideal clients
An ideal client would be a person experiencing major depression with an ego-dystonic sexual orientation. My goal would be helping the individual accept their sexual orientation and at the same time deal with the depression using ACT and cognitive-behavioral therapies. I would help the client see themselves of worthy of love and connection as well as impressing them with the idea that life is worth living.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
I believe, with many mental health disorders, there is a lack of self-compassion and that is a key element to instilling hope and a desire to move forward in life and overcome the illness.
