Oscar Ramos

PMHNP (he/him)5 years of experience

I'm Oscar Ramos, a bilingual Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with nearly 30 years of experience in emergency services, nursing, psychiatric care, education, and advanced practice. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, supportive psychotherapy, and lifestyle counseling in English and Spanish. I work with adults dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, insomnia, and stress. I know that seeking psychiatric care can feel intimidating, especially if you've felt dismissed or misunderstood before. My goal is a space where you're heard and taken seriously. My approach is whole-person, not just symptom-focused. I want to understand your history, relationships, physical health, sleep, diet, routines, culture, and past treatment experiences. You're the expert on your own life. My job is to bring clinical knowledge and honest guidance so we build a treatment plan together.

First session

Our first session is a detailed conversation: what's been happening, how it's affecting your life, what you hope will improve. No pressure to tell it perfectly. We'll cover your symptoms, mental health and medical history, medications, sleep, diet, stressors, relationships, substance use, and past treatments, including what worked and what didn't. We'll also talk goals, whether that's relief from anxiety, better sleep, more focus, more stability, or just understanding what's going on. You don't need it all figured out first. By the end, I'll explain my clinical impressions in plain language and walk through your options: medication, therapy, lifestyle or sleep changes, lab testing, coordination with other providers, or a mix. You'll leave with a clear picture and a practical next step.

Strengths

My range of experience is one of my biggest strengths. Before becoming a PMHNP, I worked in emergency services, nursing, psychiatric hospitals, clinical leadership, and education. That background taught me to stay calm under pressure, listen carefully, catch what others might miss, and explain things clearly. My style is warm, direct, and respectful. I'll sit with you through hard emotions, but I won't stay quiet if something important needs addressing. I may push back on what's keeping you stuck, but I won't shame or pressure you. Good care takes compassion and honesty together: I validate what you're going through while helping you see what might need to change. My job isn't to tell you how to live, it's to help you see your options and make decisions that support the life you want. Working in English and Spanish means I can meet you where you're most comfortable, especially around family, culture, or emotions best expressed in your first language. Culture, immigration experience, faith, and past healthcare experiences all shape how someone relates to mental health care, and I factor that in. You are more than your diagnosis or your past. You deserve care that's competent, respectful, and free of judgment.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is an adult who is experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress, ADHD, or mood changes and wants a thoughtful, collaborative approach to care. They are open to discussing medication, therapy, sleep, lifestyle, and daily habits as part of their treatment. They do not need to have everything figured out. They simply need to be willing to participate honestly, ask questions, and work toward meaningful improvement in their mental health and daily life.

Treatment methods

Motivational Interviewing

I use Motivational Interviewing to help clients explore their own reasons for change without feeling pressured, judged, or told what to do. I ask open-ended questions, listen carefully, reflect what I hear, and help clients identify the difference between where they are now and where they want to be. This approach is especially helpful when someone feels unsure about starting medication, changing habits, improving sleep, reducing substance use, or following through with treatment. Rather than pushing a decision, I help clients work through concerns, recognize their strengths, and choose realistic next steps that fit their values and goals. My role is to support change while respecting each client’s autonomy. The goal is not to convince someone, but to help them feel more confident and motivated to make decisions that support their mental health.

Psychoeducation

I use psychoeducation to help clients better understand their symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, medications, and lifestyle factors that may affect mental health. I explain information in clear, practical language so clients can make informed decisions about their care. My goal is to reduce confusion, answer questions, and help clients recognize patterns in their mood, sleep, stress, and daily functioning. When clients understand what they are experiencing and why a treatment is recommended, they are often better able to participate actively and confidently in their recovery.

Solution-Focused Brief Treatment

I use Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help clients identify what is already working, clarify what they want to improve, and build practical steps toward change. Rather than focusing only on problems, we look for strengths, past successes, available supports, and small actions that can create progress. This approach is especially helpful for concerns such as anxiety, stress, sleep problems, low motivation, and difficulty adjusting to life changes. Together, we set clear goals and focus on realistic solutions that can be applied between sessions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia to help clients identify thoughts, habits, and routines that may be interfering with sleep. We may work on creating a consistent sleep schedule, reducing time awake in bed, improving bedtime habits, managing nighttime worry, and changing unhelpful beliefs about sleep. I also provide practical education about sleep and help clients track patterns so we can make gradual, realistic changes. The goal is to improve sleep quality and build healthier sleep habits without relying only on medication.
