Hi, I’m Candace Roberts, a Licensed Professional Counselor and the founder of Purposefully Soaring Counseling Services. I work with women navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions, whether you’re starting college, entering the workforce, leaving a relationship, or figuring out what you want after years of putting others first.

I help women navigating trauma and life transitions find their voice and trust what they need. I bring warmth and honest conversation to therapy, and I care about creating a space where women of color feel understood.

I bring warmth, curiosity, and honest conversation to therapy, and I care about creating a space where women of color can feel understood without having to explain every part of their experience. My approach is trauma-informed and draws on mindfulness and EMDR when it fits your needs. Together, we’ll make space for what you’re feeling and practice ways to trust your voice, set boundaries, and make decisions that feel right for you.

First session

In our first virtual session, we’ll get to know each other, talk about what brought you to therapy, and begin to identify what you’d like to get out of our time together. If this is your first time in therapy, you don’t need to know where to start or have the right words. We can start with whatever feels most important to you. I think of therapy as opening a suitcase you’ve been carrying for a while. When you first unzip it, things may be tangled or piled on top of each other. We’ll start by taking a few things out and looking at them together. Over time, we can make sense of where they came from, what’s still serving you, and what you might be ready to set down. I hope you leave our first session feeling heard and hopeful, with a sense of where we might begin. We’ll decide on goals together and check in along the way to make sure our work is helping you in the ways that matter to you.

Strengths

My approach is person-centered, which means I follow your lead and check in about what you need from me. I might ask, “Would it help most to have me listen and support you right now, or would you like me to share what I’m noticing?” My own experiences with change have taught me how much it matters to be heard before being asked to figure out what comes next. Some days, we’ll slow down and give you room to say what you haven’t been able to say out loud. Other days, I’ll gently challenge a pattern that keeps getting in the way of what you want. I bring warmth and honesty to both, and I’ll respect your pace as you learn to trust your own voice.

Ideal clients

I work with women at turning points in their lives, whether they’re starting college, entering the workforce, going through a separation or divorce, or figuring out what they want in a new chapter. You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, or the effects of trauma. You might also be noticing how often you second-guess yourself, feel guilty when you set a boundary, or put your needs last. You don’t have to come to therapy knowing exactly what you want to work on. You may want space to talk things through, practical tools for handling what feels overwhelming, or honest feedback about patterns you’re ready to change. We’ll start with what feels most important to you and work at a pace that gives you room to build confidence in your own voice and choices.

Origin story

I was drawn to counseling because I’ve always been curious about how our experiences shape the way we see ourselves and what we believe is possible for us. I’m especially drawn to working with women at turning points in their lives, when they may be asking, “What do I want now?” or “Can I trust myself to make this decision?” I wanted to do work that gives people room to ask those questions out loud. What keeps me in this profession is seeing someone begin to take their own feelings seriously, speak up for what they need, and make choices that feel like their own.

Ongoing work together

After your first session, we’ll set a few goals together based on what you want to change or understand about yourself. In later sessions, we’ll pick up where we left off and talk about what you noticed in your everyday life. I may invite you to try something small between sessions, like jotting down when anxiety shows up and what you needed in that moment. The idea is to practice paying attention to yourself so we have something concrete to explore together. We’ll revisit your goals regularly. Progress might look like noticing anxiety sooner, pausing before automatically saying yes, or speaking up about what you need even when it feels uncomfortable. I’ll also ask how our sessions are working for you: “Would you like more feedback from me, or more room to talk?” You’re welcome to tell me when something isn’t helping or when you need more from me. Therapy can be a place to practice advocating for yourself, and your feedback helps us shape the work together.

Treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I take a person-centered approach, which means we start with what matters to you and decide together how to work on it. Some days you may need room to talk and feel heard. Other days you may want honest feedback, help making sense of a pattern, or something practical to try between sessions. I’ll check in with you about what feels most helpful. Depending on your goals, we might practice grounding when you feel overwhelmed, explore how your thoughts affect your feelings and choices, or rehearse what you want to say when setting a boundary. If past experiences still feel present in your day-to-day life, we can talk about whether a trauma therapy like EMDR might be a good fit. I’ll explain what each option involves, and we’ll decide together what feels right for you.
