Hi! My name is Suzanne McKain and I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker. As a therapist, I bring my personality into my work with humor, validation, curiosity and warmth. I received my Master's degree from the University of Cincinnati. I specialize in working with adults with anxiety, depression, PTSD, borderline personality disorder and relationship issues. I have training in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention and IPT (Interpersonal Psychotherapy). I take a collaborative and goal oriented approach that balances both acceptance and change. I use evidenced-based therapies and education to help support to you in your goals. I work to build a strong therapeutic relationship and believe that relationship, along with the effort you put into therapy, are the two biggest factors in the effectiveness of therapy.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

The first session will be a 60 minute assessment session. This assessment with include a general diagnostic assessment as well as goal setting. I can also complete a specific diagnostic assessment on request. The early sessions after that will be a mix of continued assessment, goal setting, orientation, support and intervention. We will work together to help with healing and growth. We will set goals, discussion items, and work at home together. It's also important that you practice what you learn in therapy outside of session, as therapy is only 1 hour a week.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I've worked in a variety of settings such as community mental health, substance abuse residential center, inpatient mental health, psychiatric emergency, and outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment. I've worked with adults, adolescents, and veterans. I am flexible and work with you to meet your unique needs and goals.

My treatment methods

Interpersonal

I have training in interpersonal psychotherapy. I utilize methods from interpersonal psychotherapy to help address interpersonal issues that are leading to anxiety and depression.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT can help to reduce anxiety and depression and help live life inline with your values. I use ACT to help you accept and make room for experiences you don't like and change things that you can.

Attachment-based

I have education and training in attachment-based methods. I tie in these principles as appropriate to help you improve and gain knowledge on interpersonal dynamics.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

This treatment helps you to challenges unwanted thoughts, develop alternative ways of thinking about thinking and engage in activities that bring joy and meaning. I incorporate principles of CBT into therapy and often combine them with mindfulness approaches as well as other treatment modalities.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I've completed training and had ongoing supervision in DBT. I have experience providing full model DBT in individual and groups for the last 3 years. I will often incorporate DBT skills into individual treatment as well as DBT principles of acceptance and change.
