Mackenzy Barnfield
I know how important it is to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. My passion for helping others led me to pursue a career in counseling, and I have been working in the mental health field since 2019. I earned my Master's degree in Counseling from Grand Canyon University and have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Arizona since 2021. I primarily work with children, adolescents, teens, and young adults, though I also work with adults. I support clients navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral challenges, life transitions, trauma, and relationship concerns. My approach is warm, collaborative, and tailored to each client's unique needs, utilizing evidence-based techniques such as CBT, DBT, narrative therapy, and emotion-focused interventions. I strive to create a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes. I believe everyone has the capacity for growth and healing, and I am honored to be part of that journey.
First session
During our first session, we will focus on getting to know one another and building a foundation of trust and comfort. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and any questions you may have about the therapeutic process or my approach. I also want to learn what helps you feel comfortable opening up so that we can create a safe, supportive environment where you feel heard and understood. There is no pressure to share everything right away, we will move at a pace that feels right for you.
Strengths
My approach is highly individualized and tailored to each client's unique needs. Some clients need a space where they can simply feel heard and supported, while others benefit from more guidance, structure, or gentle challenges that encourage growth and self-reflection. I strive to meet clients where they are and adapt my approach based on what will be most helpful for them. I also enjoy incorporating creative and interactive strategies when appropriate, particularly for children, adolescents, and visual learners. This may include using worksheets, visual aids, games, storytelling, or other hands-on activities to help clients better understand concepts, build coping skills, and apply what they learn in therapy to their daily lives. My goal is to make therapy both meaningful and practical, helping clients gain tools they can use outside of our sessions.
Ideal clients
I am best positioned to work with children, adolescents, and young adults, and adults. I work well with clients who are open to the therapeutic process and motivated to learn, grow, and make meaningful changes in their lives. Many of the clients I work with are seeking support with anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, self-esteem, life transitions, stress management, interpersonal relationships, or behavioral challenges. I take a collaborative approach to therapy, working alongside clients to identify realistic, measurable goals that align with their unique needs and values. Together, we build practical coping skills, increase self-awareness, and create a path toward lasting positive change in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, we explore unhelpful thinking patterns, challenge negative beliefs, and develop healthier ways of coping with life's challenges. I tailor CBT interventions to each client's developmental level and individual needs, using age-appropriate activities, discussions, and skill-building exercises to support growth and progress toward treatment goals.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I use Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients develop practical skills for managing emotions, coping with stress, improving relationships, and staying present in the moment. DBT focuses on balancing acceptance and change, helping clients learn to validate their experiences while also working toward positive growth. In sessions, I teach and practice skills related to mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. I tailor these skills to each client's age, developmental level, and individual needs, providing concrete strategies that can be applied in everyday situations to improve emotional well-being and overall functioning.
Play Therapy
incorporate play-based and activity-based interventions to help children express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that feels natural and engaging. Through the use of games, creative activities, storytelling, role-playing, and interactive exercises, children can build emotional awareness, develop coping skills, improve communication, and practice problem-solving. In virtual sessions, I adapt these activities to create an engaging online environment that supports learning and emotional growth.
