My name is Alicia Richardson, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and the founder of Heart of the Matter Counseling. I am passionate about walking alongside individuals, children, and families as they navigate life’s challenges and move toward healing, balance, and emotional well-being. I believe that meaningful change happens in safe, supportive relationships where people feel seen, heard, and valued. My counseling approach is compassionate, strengths-based, and culturally responsive. I work from the belief that each person already carries resilience within them, even during seasons of stress, transition, or emotional pain. Rather than focusing solely on problems, I help clients identify their inner strengths, nurture self-compassion, and build practical tools that support emotional regulation, healthy relationships, and overall well-being. I have specialized training and experience working with children and families, particularly in areas related to early childhood mental health, attachment, trauma, and parenting support. I also support adults who may be experiencing anxiety, stress, life transitions, or emotional overwhelm. My work is grounded in connection, collaboration, and respect for each client’s unique story, background, and values. At Heart of the Matter Counseling, my goal is to create a warm, welcoming space where clients feel safe to explore their experiences at their own pace. I view counseling as a partnership and honor each client as the expert of their own life. Together, we focus on nurturing growth, restoring hope, and supporting lasting emotional wellness—one step at a time.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During your first session with me, you can expect a welcoming, calm, and supportive environment where your comfort and sense of safety are a priority. The initial session is a time for us to get to know one another and begin building a trusting therapeutic relationship. There is no pressure to share everything at once—you are encouraged to move at a pace that feels right for you. We will discuss what brings you to counseling, your current concerns, and what you hope to gain from therapy. I may ask gentle questions about your background, relationships, and any experiences that feel important to understanding your story. This helps me gain a fuller picture of who you are, not just the challenges you may be facing. I will also explain my approach to counseling, what therapy with me typically looks like, and how we can work together toward your goals. You’ll have space to ask questions, share expectations, and express any concerns about the counseling process. For children or family sessions, the first visit may include time with caregivers to discuss goals and gather history, as well as age-appropriate engagement with the child. By the end of the session, we will begin identifying next steps and possible focus areas for future sessions. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and clearer about what therapy can offer. Above all, the first session is about creating a foundation of trust, connection, and care as we begin this journey together.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

What stands out about my therapeutic approach is the way I blend warmth, structure, and intentional nurturing to support meaningful and lasting change. I practice from a strengths-based, relational framework that prioritizes safety, connection, and self-compassion as the foundation for healing. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses, I work to understand the whole person—mind, body, relationships, and lived experiences—and tailor care to each client’s unique needs. My methods are gentle yet purposeful. I integrate evidence-informed practices with a person-centered approach, helping clients develop emotional awareness, regulation skills, and healthier patterns of relating to themselves and others. With children and families, I emphasize attachment, connection, and developmentally appropriate strategies that support emotional growth and relational safety. With adults, I focus on building resilience, nurturing self-compassion, strengthening boundaries, and helping clients through transitions and stressors with clarity and care. What clients often notice most is that therapy feels collaborative and respectful. I believe clients are the experts of their own lives, and I view therapy as a partnership rather than something “done to” them. Progress is not rushed, yet it is intentional. Over time, clients frequently report feeling more grounded, more confident in their emotional responses, and better equipped to navigate challenges with greater self-understanding and balance. Ultimately, my approach stands out because it honors both healing and growth—helping clients not only address what is difficult, but also cultivate the internal strengths and supportive practices that allow them to flourish long after therapy ends.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am best positioned to serve individuals, children, and families who are seeking a supportive, compassionate space to slow down, reflect, and nurture their emotional well-being. I work exceptionally well with clients who may be feeling overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or navigating life transitions, and who desire a gentle, relational approach to healing rather than a quick fix or overly clinical experience. I am well-suited to support children and caregivers experiencing challenges related to emotional regulation, attachment, behavior, and the effects of stress or trauma. I also work effectively with parents who want to strengthen connections, improve communication, and better understand their child’s emotional needs. My approach honors the family system and emphasizes safety, consistency, and nurturing relationships. For adults, I am a good fit for those experiencing anxiety, stress, grief, or a sense of feeling “stuck,” as well as individuals who are ready to build self-compassion, resilience, and healthier boundaries. Many of my clients value reflection, personal growth, and learning tools they can carry into everyday life. I am particularly aligned with clients who appreciate culturally responsive care and want their lived experiences and identities respected and understood. Clients who work well with me are often open to collaboration, curious about their inner world, and committed to nurturing themselves in meaningful ways. Whether the goal is healing, growth, or restoration, I strive to meet clients where they are and support them in moving forward with clarity, confidence, and care.
