Hello! I’m Tiffany Winston a LCSW (licensed clinical social worker) in the state of California. I graduated with a Master's in Social Work from USC in 2008 and have a Bachelor's from Cal State Long Beach in Psychology. I have worked in school-based mental health as well as in crisis management for the hospital. I LOVE anxious people!!! Anxiety, Depression and Anger Management are my favorite issues to work with because they are typically all linked. I have taught anxiety, depression, anger management, couples communication and work stress groups in the past using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Solution Focused therapy which is my preferred theoretical perspective. I am passionate about teaching about self-care, healthy communication, learning to set boundaries and holistic healing methods that help my clients heal from the things that trigger their symptoms. My goal is to empower my clients to find solutions that work for them and make choices/decisions to create the change in the mind, body or spirit that they want to see. I love to laugh, smile and have fun with my clients to create a safe space to grow and heal. It is my pleasure to work with clients who are passionate about working together to heal from symptoms and grow with a little bit of laughter. :-) I look forward to hearing and working with you in the future.
Clients can expect the first session to feel like an interview. I will be adving you about limits of confidentiality, my treatment modality, asking you questions for safety protocols and explaining my treatment policies. I will then proceed to asking you a million and six questions (lol) to get to know you and develop a treatment plan.
My biggest strength is in the treatment of anxiety and depression management. I LOVE anxious people!! I taught anxiety, depression and anger management classes for three years so I am very well versed in skill building with clients. I really work from a self empowerment approach so I teach my clients to learn to endure, manage and respond differently to their anxiety, depression or anger symptoms. I also have taught on couples communication which helps many clients learn the skills to communicate more effectively and learn to set boundaries which typically leads to the other symptoms (I.e.anxiety, depression and anger).
Adults (18+) and individual therapy (ONLY). I DO NOT provide couples therapy for but I do work with clients on dealing with couples communication related issues.
CBT is typically used to help my anxiety and depression clients reframe their thinking patterns around the triggers to their anxiety and depression. I typically use the priniciples from David Burns book "10 days to Self Esteem" to assist my clients in understanding thought distortions and how to challenge thought distortions. I assist my clients in looking at thing they can control (i.e. behaviors and choices) and assist them in developing a self care plan that not only lowers symptoms but also sets up healthy boundaries in their work/personal lives. We have 50% control over our thoughts and 100% control over our behaviors thus by manipulating both of these areas of our life we are able to change our emotional state. I use humor and honesty to allow for my clients to take time to question their process of how they make choices or decisions.
Solution Focused Brief treatment uses very practical approaches to set small goals that help my clients work towards their long term goals. Typically as a clinician I will ask mulitple questions of my client to allow them to self reflect on their options and setup a plan of action. If my client becomes stuck I will reflect on the reasons that they have moved away from a possible solution. This allows my clients to self reflect on their plan of action to achieve their goals. This treatment method allows for clients to see progress in the short term and actually feel like the treatment is productive rather than just them venting in session.
