Shenika Brown
I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) with over five years of experience working in outpatient hospital clinics and correctional settings. These experiences have allowed me to support individuals from diverse backgrounds and with complex mental health needs. I’ve worked with people at many different points in their journey, from those seeking help for the first time to those managing long-term conditions.
First session
Your first appointment is a thorough evaluation where we explore your symptoms, history, and goals. This helps us build a clear and personalized treatment plan. Medication Management If medication is part of your care, we’ll approach it thoughtfully and collaboratively, focusing on effectiveness, side effects, and what feels right for you. Psychotherapy I offer supportive, patient-centered therapy that may include elements of evidence-based approaches such as cognitive and behavioral strategies. Sessions are tailored to your needs and pace.
Strengths
My experience working in both outpatient hospital clinics and correctional settings has shaped how I show up as a provider in a powerful way. I’ve worked with individuals facing complex, high-acuity mental health conditions, often in environments where trust is difficult and stigma is high. That experience has strengthened my ability to: -Build trust quickly and authentically -Stay grounded and calm in challenging situations -Understand the deeper layers behind symptoms -Provide care that is both structured and compassionate Because of this, I’m comfortable working with a wide range of conditions—from anxiety and depression to bipolar disorder, substance use, and psychosis while still making each person feel seen as an individual, not a diagnosis.
Ideal clients
I’m best positioned to support adults who feel overlooked, misunderstood, or stuck, especially those navigating complex life circumstances or systemic barriers. With five years of experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner in both community and correctional health settings, I’ve worked closely with individuals facing challenges such as depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, mood instability, and difficulty adjusting to major life transitions. I have a strong understanding of the unique needs of underserved populations, including those impacted by incarceration, reentry, housing instability, or limited access to consistent care. I work well with clients who may feel hesitant about treatment, have had negative past experiences with healthcare, or are unsure where to start. You don’t need to have everything figured out, just a willingness to show up. My approach is practical, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I focus on helping clients build insight, stabilize symptoms, and develop realistic, sustainable goals. Whether you’re working toward emotional balance, improved daily functioning, or long-term personal growth, I aim to create a safe space where you feel respected, supported, and empowered to move forward.
Treatment methods
Motivational Interviewing
I use motivational interviewing to help clients feel heard, respected, and empowered—not pressured. My approach is collaborative and judgment-free, creating space for clients to explore ambivalence, clarify their goals, and strengthen their own reasons for change. In sessions, I use open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations, and thoughtful summaries to better understand each person’s story. I listen for “change talk” and gently build on it, helping clients recognize their strengths, values, and ability to take meaningful steps forward. As an NP, I integrate motivational interviewing into care to support lasting change in areas such as medication adherence, lifestyle goals, substance use concerns, mood symptoms, and overall wellness. My goal is to meet clients where they are and help them move forward with confidence, self-compassion, and a plan that feels realistic for their life.
