(he/him)
Hello, I’m Dennis Alvarez, PsyD. I believe counseling should both encourage and thoughtfully challenge individuals to move toward their fullest potential by addressing the mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of their lives. I hold a Doctorate in Psychology and a post-graduate diploma in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and I am a licensed psychotherapist with experience across hospital, treatment, and private-practice settings. Throughout my career, I have provided individual and group therapy as well as comprehensive psychological assessments to adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relational distress, substance-use concerns, and life-transition stressors. My clinical background includes work in hospitals, substance-use treatment programs, and outpatient private practice, where I integrate evidence-based approaches within a holistic, person-centered framework. I am also the author of When Heaven Was Silent: Integrating Psychology and Theology in the Garden of Gethsemane, which explores the experience of mental suffering through both clinical and historical perspectives. My doctoral dissertation focused on trauma and psychological adaptation, further shaping my approach to helping individuals understand their internal patterns, build resilience, and restore a sense of meaning and purpose. In my work with clients, I emphasize helping people understand how and why certain thoughts, emotions, and behavioral patterns develop, particularly in the context of anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance-use histories. I strive to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment while also encouraging insight, personal responsibility, and growth. My goal is to help you move toward a more grounded, authentic, and meaningful life.
During our initial session, we will discuss what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from our work together. I work primarily with adults and adolescents (ages 12 and older) who experience depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, and relationship concerns. I have extensive experience working with individuals who have survived trauma, and I approach treatment with care, structure, and respect for each person’s pace and story. My goal is to help you better understand your experiences, develop effective coping strategies, and move toward greater stability, insight, and emotional well-being.
My greatest strengths include my ability to empathize deeply, listen attentively, and build strong therapeutic relationships, grounded in strong theoretical knowledge and clinical research. My experience spans high-acuity inpatient and emergency room settings as well as long-term outpatient private practice, allowing me to support individuals both in moments of crisis and through sustained therapeutic work. I approach care through a trauma-informed lens, prioritizing safety, stability, collaboration, and respect for each client’s pace while helping them build insight, resilience, and lasting change.
I enjoy working with individuals who are sincerely interested in reducing or eliminating their symptoms and improving their quality of life.
