My practice will involve working with adults (ages 18+) who suffer from various mental health struggles including trauma, depression, anxiety, bipolar, and anger.
I spent 8 years working with inmates in our local jail and have experience with helping those suffering from addiction. I also have experience in working with crisis intervention with local emergency rooms where people required a higher level of care.
First session
Our first session is purely about getting to know each other, more importantly getting to know you. We will begin by gathering pertinent information about you including your history and what has led you to seek individual therapy.
Strengths
Listening truly is the most important part of what I do. We live in a never-ending cycle of information and that noise can dominate our lives to the point where we feel no one is listening. I want to know what is going on in your life even if you feel it is not important or even interesting. I want you to feel that you have a place at the table. Providing tools to get where you want to be is also crucial even though the path is not always an easy one and the tools do not always come second nature. I am what you call eclectic, which means not one type of therapy fits all. It's all about what will be most effective for you.
Ideal clients
I want to work with adults (ages 18+) as my experience and training has shown me that this population is where I am the most effective. While adults can be at various stages of their lives, important milestones in development have already been reached by the age of 18. My therapeutic relationship has always been geared more towards adults, because I am one and I feel I can empathize on that level.
Treatment methods
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
This approach is meant to assist people in being able to "live in the now." So much of our stress comes from a brain that is stretched from one week to the next. DBT helps us regulate a stressed brain and learn to live in the present versus being emotionally scattered throughout the week.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
This approach involves challenging the brain and the, sometimes, unrealistic ideas it comes up with. Some view themselves as unlovable, because a spouse or partner left them, but is that actually the case? CBT challenges the brain, especially when it comes to self-esteem and negative self-talk.
EMDR
This is approach is geared towards those suffering from severe trauma (e.g., combat, physical or sexual abuse) as it helps people heal from tragic and unfortunate life experiences. We use the eyes to reprocess difficult memories, emotions, and/or thoughts. However, it can also be utilized for other issues such as anxiety and depression.
Motivational Interviewing
This approach targets those who struggle with the ability and motivation to change. Many feel stuck and are unsure of why they continue to repeat the same cycle. Motivational interviewing involves doing a deep dive into what is preventing someone from making positive changes in his or her life.
