New to Grow
Hello, I'm Dr. Onyebuchi ("Buchi") Nwaokolo, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C. I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. I work with adolescents, adults, and older adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma-related conditions, insomnia, and other mental health concerns. My goal is to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout their treatment journey. My approach combines comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and therapeutic interventions tailored to each individual's needs. I believe in treating the whole person, not just symptoms, and work collaboratively with clients to develop practical, personalized treatment plans that support lasting emotional wellness, improved functioning, and a better quality of life.
During our first session, we'll take time to get to know each other and discuss what brings you to treatment. I will ask questions about your current concerns, symptoms, medical and mental health history, lifestyle, and treatment goals to gain a comprehensive understanding of your needs. This initial appointment is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, share your experiences, and discuss what you hope to achieve through treatment. Together, we will develop a personalized plan that may include medication management, therapeutic interventions, lifestyle recommendations, and follow-up care as appropriate. My goal is to create a welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you feel comfortable sharing your concerns. By the end of the session, you can expect to have a clearer understanding of your diagnosis, treatment options, and the next steps toward improving your mental health and overall well-being.
I bring a compassionate, patient-centered, and collaborative approach to every session. As a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner, I have a broad understanding of the connection between mental and physical health, allowing me to provide comprehensive care that addresses the whole person rather than just symptoms. My approach stands out because I take the time to listen carefully, build genuine therapeutic relationships, and tailor treatment plans to each client's unique needs, goals, and life circumstances. I combine evidence-based medication management with supportive psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and practical coping strategies to help clients achieve meaningful and lasting improvements in their mental health. Clients often appreciate my ability to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where they feel heard, respected, and actively involved in their care. I believe that successful treatment is built on trust, open communication, and a partnership between provider and client, empowering individuals to take an active role in their healing and personal growth.
I am best positioned to work with adolescents, adults, and older adults who are seeking support for anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, relationship challenges, self-esteem concerns, grief and loss, and difficulties managing emotions. I enjoy working with individuals who may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or uncertain about their next steps and are looking for practical tools to create meaningful change. My clients are often motivated to better understand themselves, develop healthier coping strategies, improve relationships, increase confidence, and achieve greater balance in their lives. I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients can explore their experiences, build resilience, and work toward personal growth at a pace that feels comfortable for them. Using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based interventions, and strengths-based techniques, I help clients identify patterns that may be holding them back and develop skills that support lasting emotional well-being. Whether someone is navigating a specific challenge or seeking overall personal development, I strive to create a collaborative therapeutic relationship that fosters insight, healing, and empowerment.
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
In my practice, I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as an evidence-based approach to help clients identify and modify unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. CBT focuses on understanding the connection between a person's thinking patterns, feelings, and actions, and developing more adaptive ways of responding to challenges. Depending on the client's needs and goals, I integrate additional therapeutic techniques alongside CBT. These may include: Behavioral interventions such as activity scheduling, behavioral activation, exposure exercises, and skills practice. Mindfulness-based techniques to increase present-moment awareness and improve emotional regulation. Solution-Focused Therapy strategies to help clients identify strengths, build on successes, and develop practical solutions. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) interventions that encourage psychological flexibility and values-based action. Psychoeducation to help clients better understand their symptoms, coping strategies, and treatment process. Stress management and relaxation techniques, including breathing exercises, grounding skills, and progressive muscle relaxation. Motivational Interviewing techniques to enhance readiness for change and support goal achievement. I tailor treatment to each individual's unique circumstances, collaboratively establishing goals and selecting interventions that best support their emotional well-being, personal growth, and long-term success.
