I am Dr. Brenden Troster, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in Southern Minnesota, where I've spent the majority of my life. With a deep-rooted passion for guiding individuals and families through their challenges, I offer more than just traditional therapy. My approach is holistic, considering the intricate systems and environments that impact each person. At the core of my practice, I integrate physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions to ensure comprehensive care and healing. Alongside my therapeutic work, I also coach adults and children in martial arts at Freestyle Martial Arts in Albert Lea, Minnesota. This experience enriches my therapeutic approach, providing unique insights into the discipline and resilience that benefit mental health. I believe that therapy is a collaborative journey. Together, we will explore the paths that lead to a healthier, more fulfilled life, addressing the challenges you face with empathy and expertise. Whether you're navigating personal, relationship, or family issues, my goal is to support and empower you at every step.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Your first session is a gentle, collaborative 50-minute meeting designed to help us both feel comfortable working together. We’ll begin by reviewing confidentiality, consent, and any practical details so you know exactly how your information is protected. Then I’ll invite you to share whatever feels most important, what brings you to therapy right now, your background, and the changes you’re hoping to see. There’s no pressure to have it all organized; we’ll go at your pace. I’ll also give you a brief overview of how I work, so you can see how we might tailor our approach to your unique goals. You’ll have plenty of time to ask questions, share any concerns, and get a sense of whether we’re a good fit. By the end, we’ll outline a clear, personalized plan for moving forward so you leave feeling heard, supported, and hopeful.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

What truly sets my practice apart is its deeply holistic foundation. I integrate the physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of your well-being, recognizing that true healing happens when we address the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. Drawing from my PhD in Developmental Psychology and systemic Marriage and Family Therapy training, I view every challenge—whether personal, relational, or familial—through the lens of the larger systems and life stages shaping your experience. A unique element I bring is the integration of insights from coaching martial arts for over a decade. This gives me a distinctive perspective on building discipline, resilience, and mind-body connection that I weave into therapy, helping clients develop practical inner strength alongside emotional growth. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma (especially with children or adolescents), life transitions, couples conflict, or complex family dynamics, our work is always collaborative, empathetic, and tailored to your specific context. Clients often share that this blend creates a grounded, empowering space where they feel truly seen. My goal is to support lasting transformation—so you leave therapy not only with relief, but with greater self-understanding, healthier relationships, and the tools to thrive across every stage of life.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I’m best positioned to serve adults who are ready for meaningful, lasting change—whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, grief, stress, relationship patterns, life transitions, creative blocks, or a deeper search for meaning and purpose. You don’t need to have everything figured out. What matters most is a willingness to explore both the practical side of your challenges (thoughts, behaviors, and nervous-system responses) and the deeper layers of your inner world (dreams, symbols, and unconscious patterns). If you value a blend of evidence-based tools like CBT and EFT with mindful presence and Jungian depth work, you’ll feel right at home in my practice. My ideal clients are motivated, open-hearted individuals who want more than symptom relief—they want to understand themselves more fully, build real resilience, and step into a more authentic, balanced life. If that sounds like you, I’d be honored to walk alongside you on that journey.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a practical, evidence-based approach to help clients create real, lasting change. We start by gently identifying the specific thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that are keeping you stuck or feeling overwhelmed. Together, we examine how these patterns affect your emotions and daily life, then replace them with more balanced, helpful ways of thinking and responding.

Mindfulness-Based Therapy

I use Mindfulness-Based Therapy to help clients build present-moment awareness and respond to thoughts and emotions with greater calm and compassion. Through gentle practices like breath awareness, body scans, and mindful observation, we learn to interrupt cycles of rumination, anxiety, or overwhelm without judgment.

Jungian

I use Jungian Therapy as a depth-oriented approach to help you explore the unconscious and move toward greater wholeness and self-understanding. Together we work with dreams, symbols, archetypes, and active imagination to uncover hidden patterns, integrate the shadow, and reconnect with your inner wisdom.

Trauma-Focused CBT

I combine Trauma-Focused CBT with Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) to gently and effectively process trauma while reducing its emotional intensity. We use TF-CBT to identify and reframe trauma-related thoughts and beliefs, while EFT tapping quickly calms the nervous system, releases stuck emotions, and lowers distress in the moment. This integrated approach is especially helpful for PTSD, anxiety, grief, or any trauma that still feels overwhelming. Sessions are always tailored to your pace and goals, blending practical cognitive tools with simple tapping exercises you can use on your own between sessions. My aim is to help you feel safer in your body, regain control, and move forward with lasting relief and resilience.
