Hello, my name is Michelle Kos. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and I have over 20 years experience helping others. I have worked with all different walks of life from very small children up through the span of adulthood. I have a great deal of experience working with people going through a wide range of mental health concerns including depression, anger, hopelessness, anxiety, stress, and dysfunctional eating. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe place to discuss feelings openly and without judgement so that we can begin to progress toward desired goals. I pride myself in my ability to build a therapeutic relationship with my clients that allows us to work openly and collaboratively. We all face challenges in life. I have the utmost respect for my clients and their willingness to seek help. My ultimate goal is to make sure they get it and feel safe and comfortable doing so. My approach to counseling is eclectic and more of an integrative type of therapy focusing on the needs of my clients. A style I often find very effective is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focusing on how thoughts and behaviors interact. Great strides forward can be made when re-framing and refocusing our energy. I focus with clients on making small actionable steps toward progress. When life hands us challenges it can be overwhelming. Focusing on small steps toward a larger goal can help reduce stress and help us to move forward. I meet my clients where they are and work together to progress at their pace. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you to get you through whatever challenges life throws your way.
The first session is all about getting to know you. I want to get an overall picture of you as a person, your mental health history, family history, things that you feel have impacted you throughout your life to influence who you are today as well as an overview of your current life. It is a lot to cover but the fist session is an overview that we will build on as we work together. This session is also a time for you to ask any questions you may have for me. Most importantly I want you to feel heard, connected and comfortable in this therapeutic relationship. Learning about your history helps to give me a good starting point to understand you as a person.
I feel the therapeutic relationship is of the utmost importance so I do find it critical to make sure I connect with my clients.
I enjoy working with a variety of clients. One of my favorite topics to assist clients with is life transitions. This could mean any major shift in ones life from going off to college, getting first your first job, getting married, having your first child, buying your first house, becoming an empty nester, switching careers, a break up, divorce, etc. There are so many transitions that can happen in one's life and they can be challenging times. I really enjoy helping clients through the emotions that these experiences can bring up, helping them navigate those situations feeling supported and guiding them through making the best transition possible for them into the new situation. Some common challenges I see in my practice are anxiety, depression, women's issues, parenting, career challenges.
I am very action oriented and like to provide my clients with actionable steps to take toward change. My approach is eclectic as I feel therapy is not "one size fits all", every client has different needs. I often utilize a Cognitive Behavioral approach to help clients begin to take control of their lives and make the changes they want to make. Providing direction/steps for clients to take in between sessions helps them to continue practicing those skills/learnings, that are introduced in therapy, on a day to day basis in order to really impact change.
