Dori Corrado Gay is a licensed Family and Marriage therapist. While she has been trained in family and couples relationship issues, during her 15 years as a therapist she has helped patients with issues like depression, anxiety and PTSD. She founded and owned a facility for women in recovery from drugs and alcohol so she knows how to help patients suffering from substance abuse disorder as well as their families who are impacted by addiction. While each patient has different needs, she believes that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is effective with most mood disorders. Treating the underlying thoughts which cause the symptoms produces long term success. For couples counseling she emphasizes Solution Focused Therapy. Couples need help at the first session and she makes sure there are concrete homework assignments that will help the immediate needs of the couple.
In your first session Dori will work with you to assess your goals and develop a plan to help you achieve them.
For most mood disorders, Dori believes that cognitive behavioral therapy and sometimes dialectical behavioral therapy are most effective. For couples, there is usually need to make some changes quickly that can help the relationship begin to head in the right direction. For that reason she believes that solution focused therapy is most effective with couples.
Dori believes her many years helping people in therapy and in her substance abuse facility has given her the background, understanding and compassion to help her patients. Her biggest strength is in being able to help couples to strengthen their relationship and improve communication. Her years of work in the substance abuse field has taught her the many complications of addiction. During that time, she has worked with women and men who are depressed, anxious and have a history of trauma.
