Shelonda Phillips-McDonald
Hello, I am, Shelonda Phillips-McDonald, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with nearly three decades of experience providing compassionate and client-centered therapeutic services. I am committed to creating a safe, supportive environment where clients feel heard, validated, challenged, and accepted for who they are. Throughout my career, I have served in a variety of roles within the social work and mental health fields, gaining extensive knowledge and experience that have shaped my holistic approach to helping others. My diverse professional background has strengthened my ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life, approaching each person with empathy, respect, and understanding. I am passionate about empowering clients to navigate life’s challenges, discover their strengths, and achieve meaningful personal growth.
First session
During the first session, clients are given the opportunity to tell their story and have their voice truly heard. This initial meeting is focused on building rapport, establishing trust, discussing expectations for the therapeutic process, and identifying meaningful goals for treatment. I view this session as the foundation of our work together, creating a space where clients can feel safe, respected, and understood. My hope is that clients leave the session feeling heard, validated, and supported, with a renewed sense of hope and confidence about their journey toward healing, growth, and the work we will do together in future sessions.
Strengths
One of the greatest strengths I bring to each therapy session is the ability to listen with intention and empathy. I believe that when clients feel truly heard and validated, it creates a foundation of trust that allows them to be open and honest about themselves and the reasons they are seeking therapy. Establishing this level of trust is essential to building a strong therapeutic relationship. Once that foundation is in place, it creates space for authenticity, both for the client and for me as a therapist. Whether I am gently challenging a belief or perspective, helping clients explore new ways of thinking, or simply providing support and encouragement, my goal is to meet clients where they are while helping them move toward growth, healing, and self-discovery.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is an African American woman between the ages of 18 and 55 who is navigating life transitions that have contributed to feelings of anxiety, depression, stress, or uncertainty. She may be experiencing changes related to relationships, career, family, motherhood, grief, or personal identity and is seeking support as she moves through these challenges. Most importantly, she is ready to engage in the therapeutic process, do the necessary work, and take meaningful steps toward achieving her goals. I value working with clients who are committed to their personal growth and healing and are open to exploring new perspectives, developing healthy coping strategies, and embracing positive change.
Treatment methods
Strength-Based
I have used the strength-based method in my practice for over 10 years. Once their areas of strength are defined, I used those areas to identify and develop a treatment plan to address issues that the client presents. The strength-based model allows the client to obtain some success in addressing issues/concerns and build from there. It is also easy to in cooperate other modalities in this method such as cognitive behavior therapy; trauma focus cognitive behavior therapy; motivational interviewing; mindfulness, and etc.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I've been using CBT in my practice for the past ten years. It's helped numerous clients challenge recurring thoughts and manage their anxiety. We'll use CBT to examine how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact. We'll then use that knowledge to change your thinking patterns, helping you lead a more relaxed, less stressful life.
