New to Grow
I have been in the mental health field for over 8 years working as a caser manager for kids 6 to 17, working at a rehab facility, working as a substance abuse counselor in a prison and running my private practice. I offer EMDR, Trauma Informed CBT, DBT, Solution Focused, and Mindfulness based approaches. Are you riding the hot mess express? When is the last time you had a good cry and not because you are angry? Do you feel like a robot and/or don't know what you want and need? Do you know exactly why you do what you do and still can't make any changes? Have you got in trouble because you used unhealthy coping skills and wants to learn how to do different? I have helped people from many different backgrounds and lived experiences get to a point where there they can live the life they want and not the one their past has created for them. I only have two rules for my clients: "you aren't allowed to say sorry because you didn't do anything wrong" and "you are allowed to tell me no". I use whatever method my client needs to help either process the past or learn new skills in the present. Not all therapy requires you to process the past.
In the first session you tell me only what you are comfortable with and let me know how theses things affect your functioning currently. We work together to come up with a plan of if you want to process past experiences or work on learning new skills. Along with that we work together to determine the frequency of your sessions that best works for you. Most importantly we get to know each other so you can decide if you are comfortable with me and if you believe I am a good fit for you.
I utilize talk therapy and EMDR to help clients in the many different stages of healing. Each session is dictated by your needs, even if that means we spend one session talking about your interest. Sometimes the most therapeutic thing can be engaging in distractions. I cuss like sailor, however if you don't like that, then I will absolutely curb that for you. I will challenge you when you need it and give you space to have big emotions when you need it. I believe that finding the things that ground you and making time for them, can help with the therapeutic process and help you figure out what you need and want.
I have a lot of experience working with people who have experienced traumatic events, struggle with depression, anxiety, ADHD, suicidal ideations and/or self harm. I have worked with client that struggle with substance use or addictions. These things often result is struggles to regulate emotions and struggles with communicating and I have many years experience helping people learn to feel their emotions in a healthy manner and communicate more effectively.
When a client struggles to process their past because of their emotions or lack their of, I utilize EMDR to help them build safety measures and experience emotions in a way that feels more safe.
This is used to help with emotion regulation, challenge thinking, use healthy coping skills, learn to communicate more effectively, and to feel emotions in your body.
Dissociation is a way to protect the mind and the body from itself. I help client reconnect their mind and body so that emotions become safe again.
