Kim Denton
Hello! I am a therapist who believes in getting to the root of things and empowering people to overcome. I use CBT, TF-CBT, art therapy, EMDR and other modalities. Most of all, I place the client in control and focus on a person-centered approach. I have experience with trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, grief, forensic interviews and court orders.
I advocate but I walk beside my patients and I cheer for them.
I enjoy group work and peer support.
First session
After leaving a first session, a client should feel some hope. I want them to see change in their future. Starting therapy can be hard but once the step is taken they feel hopeful.
Strengths
I am an average person who grew up in a blue-collar family with a disabled mother. Mom was an example of tenacity every day. She proved that obstacles are only as big as a person’s mindset. Because of her example, I struggle when people give up. I push back when they are dishonest. I advocate but I walk beside my patients and I cheer for them. I have been known to shed a tear with them and go for the win in the UNO game.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is the person motivated for change. They will engage in the session and understand that the work dictates their outcome. They can accept challenges and aim for solutions. My ideal client will work outside the session. They are insightful and reflective. Their challenges might be various stressors in life like parenting, grief or employment. Their goals can be small or large.
Origin story
I had reached a stage in my career that I felt unfulfilled. I wanted something different but I didn’t know what was next. Then while driving to an event for first responder line of duty deaths, I told my husband that my dream would be to work with that population . I was a first responder, so I experienced the mental challenges. Becoming a therapist became my goal. I blindly finished those years of grad school. It was tough but it was worth it. Now I see firsthand how people of all populations move forward and it is incredibly rewarding.
Ongoing work together
Ongoing sessions should build off the previous session. I aim to understand how all the pieces are connected. As this comes together thoughts, feelings and behaviors make sense. The client will see progress even if it’s small.
Treatment methods
EMDR
When using EMDR I gather the information and determine the person’s main negative belief. I explain the stages and when the client is ready we move on.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
CBT is used during most sessions. We consider how thoughts, feelings and behaviors work together then consider how to change negative patterns. Even what we say to ourselves matters. CBT will identify how.
Faith-based therapy
Spirituality can be a strength. Tapping into that can help clients change mindset and find hope.
