Dr. Julie Sorenson
I’m Dr. Julie Sorenson, a licensed mental health counselor and professional counselor with more than 20 years of experience in education and mental health. At A Fresh New Start Counseling, I provide compassionate, individualized therapy for adults, couples, and families navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship concerns, life transitions, and other challenges. My approach is practical, supportive, and judgment-free, helping clients better understand themselves, build effective tools, and create meaningful change in their lives.
First session
Your first session is about getting to know one another and creating a space where you feel comfortable, heard, and understood. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you’re experiencing, and what you would like to be different in your life. There is no pressure to share everything at once—we’ll move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. My goal is for you to leave your first session feeling supported, hopeful, and with a clearer idea of how we can work together toward the changes you want to make.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths is meeting clients exactly where they are without judgment. With more than 20 years of experience in education and mental health, I bring warmth, authenticity, and a practical approach to therapy. I don’t believe therapy should be one-size-fits-all, so I draw from approaches such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, exposure therapy, and family systems to meet each client’s individual needs. My goal is for clients to leave sessions not only feeling heard and understood, but also with practical tools they can use in their everyday lives.
Ideal clients
My ideal client is someone who may feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, disconnected, or simply tired of carrying everything on their own. They don’t have to know exactly what they need or even where to begin—they just need to be open to exploring what is getting in the way of the life they want. I enjoy working with clients who want to better understand themselves, develop practical tools, strengthen their relationships, heal from difficult experiences, and create meaningful, lasting change at a pace that feels right for them.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use CBT to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and identify patterns that may be keeping them stuck. Together, we challenge unhelpful thinking, develop healthier coping strategies, and practice practical skills that clients can use outside of therapy. I take an individualized, integrative approach and may also incorporate DBT, EMDR, exposure therapy, and EFT based on each client’s needs and goals. Therapy is never one-size-fits-all, so we continually evaluate what is working and adjust our approach as needed.
