My name is Natalie Cunningham, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Originally from New York City, I have called the South home for the past 10 years. Before entering private practice, I completed my graduate internship at a long-term residential treatment facility serving individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. For the past several years, I have worked in private practice, specializing in the treatment of trauma and trauma-related concerns, including depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health conditions. My therapeutic approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and client-centered therapy. I believe therapy is most effective when clients feel comfortable, understood, and accepted. While I maintain a professional and evidence-based approach, my style is warm, approachable, and conversational. My goal is to create an environment where therapy feels like a genuine, collaborative conversation rather than a clinical experience, allowing clients to feel at ease as they work toward healing and personal growth.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

During our first session, I will primarily focus on getting to know you and gathering background information as part of a comprehensive Biopsychosocial assessment. This process helps me better understand your experiences, strengths, and challenges so that we can develop a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and goals.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and Client-Centered. I tend to be more relaxed and less traditional than many therapists, adapting each session to your individual needs and pace. I strive to understand your experiences from your perspective, using empathy to help you gain insight, identify meaningful solutions, and develop practical tools for navigating life's challenges. When appropriate, I provide honest, direct feedback in a way that is compassionate, supportive, and respectful.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is consistent with attendance, is willing to do the work required to improve their symptoms, is honest about their treatment goals and the issues they are facing. Additionally, they are respectful and comfortable with a therapist that has a casual therapeutic style, while still keeping things professional. Additionally, I have experience with people experiencing life changes, anxiety, depression, trauma disorders, Borderline Personality Disorder, high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, veterans, LGBT, and grief

My treatment methods

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people process and recover from distressing life experiences. During EMDR, I will guide you through a structured process and utilize various techniques to use bilateral stimulation. This helps to reduce the emotional impact of those memories and promote adaptive healing.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and modify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. By recognizing the connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions, CBT equips individuals with practical strategies to develop healthier coping skills, improve emotional well-being, and effectively manage a wide range of mental health concerns.
