Hi, I’m Alex Mullins, MSW, LISW, a licensed independent social worker with over 9 years of experience providing individual, group, and family therapy to children, adolescents, and families. My approach is warm, supportive, and strengths-based, with a focus on creating a safe space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow. I work collaboratively with clients and families to address challenges such as anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation, anger, and behavioral concerns while building practical skills that can be used at home, school, and in everyday life.

First session

The first session will focus on getting to know the child and family, understanding what brought them to therapy, and beginning to build a trusting therapeutic relationship. I will create a welcoming, age-appropriate environment where the child can feel comfortable being themselves and sharing at their own pace. We will begin identifying the child’s strengths, challenges, and goals for therapy while discussing practical ways I can support them. Parents and caregivers will also have an opportunity to share their concerns and what they hope to see improve. By the end of the first session, families can expect a clearer understanding of the therapy process and an initial plan for moving forward together.

Strengths

What makes my approach stand out is my focus on building genuine, trusting relationships with children while meeting them where they are. I believe therapy should feel safe, supportive, and engaging—not like another place where a child is being told what they are doing wrong. I use a strengths-based, person-centered approach that allows children to feel heard and understood while helping them develop practical skills for managing emotions, behavior, anxiety, and attention. I also value collaboration with parents and caregivers so that the skills developed in therapy can carry over into everyday life. My goal is not simply to reduce challenging behaviors, but to help children understand themselves, recognize their strengths, build confidence, and develop the tools they need to thrive.

Ideal clients

My ideal clients are children ages 6–12 who may be experiencing anxiety, difficulty managing anger or big emotions, challenges with attention and impulsivity, or struggles with behavior at home or school. I especially enjoy working with children who may have difficulty expressing what they are feeling or who need a safe, supportive environment to build confidence and emotional regulation skills. I work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to better understand each child’s unique needs, strengths, and experiences and to develop practical strategies that can be used both in and outside of therapy. My goal is to help children feel understood and accepted while giving them the tools and confidence to navigate challenges and thrive.

Treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

I will utilize a person-centered and humanistic approach to create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment where the child feels heard, understood, and accepted. I believe that children are more able to develop emotional regulation, self-awareness, and healthy coping skills when they feel secure and have a strong therapeutic relationship built on empathy, authenticity, and unconditional positive regard. Treatment will be individualized to the child's developmental level, strengths, interests, and specific needs. Through play, age-appropriate activities, emotional identification, and therapeutic conversation, I will help the child develop a greater understanding of their emotions, recognize their strengths, and build confidence in their ability to manage difficult experiences.
