LICSW, 40 years of experience
New to Grow
I am a licensed, independent clinical social worker (LICSW) of African American descent. I have provided psychotherapy to women, children, adolescents, families, and adults for over 40 years. I specialize in addressing issues of oppression with LGBTQ+ clients and people of color. My focus is on empowerment and becoming free from the effects of personal and societal trauma. I strive to create a safe and welcoming environment that allows clients to explore obstacles related to anxiety, depression, and/or self-care. I focus on helping clients improve their quality of life by developing emotional expression, improving communication, and setting boundaries with themselves and those around them.
In our first session we will develop a road map for treatment building on your goals, concerns, and experiences. This assessment will take a look at where you have been and where you would like to be in the future. I want to know what your life would look like if you could magically fix everything bothering you. We don't use magic, but it's helpful to visualize your ideal life, so that we have a framework to identify your goals.
I work with many clients who have been affected by trauma in their families and in society. I enjoy helping clients explore the ways that culture and ethnicity play a significant role in their experience. In addition to traditional techniques of psychotherapy, I also use mindfulness and meditation to support the process of healing. My own experiences of recovery from the effects of racism, homophobia and trauma have shaped my approach as a healer. I will help you look at your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors so that you can decide what is holding you back from being your most authentic self and begin to chart a path toward self-actualization.
My clients want to address mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, as well as identity, oppression, and relationship issues. My approach is strength-based and client-centered. I assist clients with identifying past and present triggers for emotions and behaviors. We work on developing coping skills and overcoming the effects of past traumas while addressing current relationships and concerns. I include mindfulness as a tool for reducing stress and the impact of depression and anxiety.
