Rebecca Kern
I am a laid back individual who has been married to Kevin for 31 years. We have two adult daughters and several pets (birds, cats, and dogs). I enjoy quiet activities such as reading, cooking, and gardening. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Psychology with a specialization in Gerontology. I have completed the third chapter of my dissertation. I am ready to be finished and enjoy additional leisure time!
First session
During a first session, I find it helpful to review the client intake form as it allows for additional information to be discussed and a rapport to be established between the individual and myself. Additionally, we discuss what goals the individual would like to see for themselves and steps that we can take to help get there.
Strengths
I feel what makes me a great provider are strengths such as empathy, genuine regard, patience, great listening skills, and being able to make adaptations in a session to help individuals better understand and engage in the session.
Ideal clients
I have many years of experience and knowledge in working with those who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and related conditions. I also provide services to their parents in relation to their loved one. Additionally, I provide services to older adults as they go through the transitions and losses experienced as they age. Their family members and caregivers are also persons who I am able to support.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I use many treatment methods tailored to the individual's needs. However, I use CBT frequently to help individuals learn how to change their maladaptive thoughts, feelings and behaviors into healthy ones.
Solution-Focused Brief Treatment
This is a beneficial treatment method to help individuals identify solutions to their challenges instead of becoming focused on the challenge or problem and getting stuck.
Humanistic
Humanistic therapy is beneficial in that it allows for a holistic approach for an individual to develop strength and a healthy sense of self.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Tools acquired in mindfulness based therapy help individuals learn how to be in the present moment. Many activities can be a mindful modality such as meditation, breathing exercises and other activities.
Psychoeducation
Psychoeducation is beneficial to individuals as it provides education and support so that they can better understand, gain knowledge, and learn how to cope with their challenges.
