New to Grow
Hello, my name is Dr Jeff Geibel PhD. I am a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania. I have worked as a counselor/therapist in the mental health field for 33 years. I hold a MA in Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Clinical Psychology. I have held several Director level positions across various treatment settings ranging from psychiatric inpatient to low level outpatient. I need to congratulate you on entering therapy/counseling as seeking help is very hard, but in many cases, a needed step towards increasing one's quality of life. I believe it is a privilege to be able to accompany you on this journey.
In our first session together, here's what you can expect
The initial session has both a task and objective. My task is to collect current and past history on the reason or factors that have lead you to therapy/counseling at this point in time. This is accomplished through being present, active listening and intentional engagement. The objective of the first session is for the client to feel heard, experience rapport, and to feel hopeful, that through the therapeutic process the client can get to a place that they want to be within their individual lives. Life is more satisfying and has an increase in quality.
The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions
I really believe that a "successful therapy experience" are due to factors that exist within a strong working professional alliance between therapist-client. The therapist's ability to create an environment that the client experiences strong rapport, a level of trust, and see the therapist/counselor as a human being....lead to better outcomes. When this type of therapeutic environment has been created, it is only then that therapeutic techniques and approaches become a very effective and powerful tool in helping clients meet their goals and personal aspirations.
The clients I'm best positioned to serve
The ideal client for me is someone who feels lost and uncertain what to do next to feel better. Someone who has tried different ways to make life changes that would lead to greater life satisfaction and a better quality of life. Often people decide to try therapy/counseling as a last resort after not being able to feel better or feel satisfied within one or several areas of their lives. When internal needs are not met and life goals not achieved the result is usually a range of despair, depression, and anxiety, and sometimes hopelessness as one questions life itself and the point of it all. Some of the clinical issues that I can hep with include anxiety, depression, past traumas, relationship problems, grief/loss issues, and substance use issues.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Most people enter therapy because they are experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression, or some form of emotional discomfort. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy helps people reduce the intensity of emotional distress/discomfort through understanding the connection between their thoughts and emotions, and how thoughts and emotions often produce what we do and don't do (behaviors).
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is an approach that can help people make and sustain behavioral changes that will ultimately lead to a higher quality of life. It focuses on ways to increase an individual's motivation for a desired change, and views "change" as a process.
