About me

I’m Akila, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is passionate about helping adults navigate life’s challenges, strengthen their relationships, and reconnect with themselves. I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, work-related stress, self-esteem challenges, and patterns that may be keeping them from feeling fulfilled. My approach is compassionate, honest, and nonjudgmental, while also creating space for meaningful reflection, accountability, and growth.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin exploring what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about what’s currently happening in your life, your history, relationships, strengths, challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy. You can expect a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can show up authentically, ask questions, and begin identifying meaningful goals for our work together.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I bring warmth, compassion, honesty, and a genuine sense of curiosity into each session. My approach is supportive and nonjudgmental, but I also believe meaningful growth sometimes requires being challenged to look at yourself, your relationships, and your patterns differently. With a strong relational lens, I help clients understand not only what they are experiencing, but how past experiences, relationships, and learned patterns may be influencing the way they think, feel, and show up today. My goal is to create a space where you feel both supported and empowered to make meaningful, lasting changes.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is an adult who may appear to have it all together on the outside but feels overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, disconnected, or emotionally exhausted on the inside. You may be navigating relationship challenges, work-related stress, life transitions, self-esteem concerns, depression, anxiety, or simply questioning what you want your life to look like moving forward. You don’t have to have everything figured out, you just need to be open to self-reflection, honest conversations, and doing the work necessary for meaningful change. Together, we’ll work toward greater self-awareness, healthier relationships, stronger boundaries, and a life that feels more aligned with who you are and who you want to become.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify and understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we explore unhelpful thought patterns and beliefs that may contribute to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or feeling stuck. I help clients challenge these patterns, develop healthier perspectives, and practice practical strategies that support meaningful and lasting change.

Gottman method

I incorporate principles from the Gottman Method to help clients better understand their relationship patterns, communication styles, emotional needs, and responses to conflict. While commonly used in couples therapy, I also use Gottman-informed strategies with individuals to explore how they show up in relationships, strengthen communication and boundary-setting skills, and develop healthier, more fulfilling connections with others.

Narrative

I use Narrative Therapy to help clients explore the stories they have developed about themselves through their experiences, relationships, and challenges. Together, we identify narratives that may no longer serve them, separate the person from the problem, and uncover strengths and perspectives that may have been overlooked. This approach helps clients create a more empowering understanding of themselves and move forward in ways that align with their values and goals.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

I use Solution-Focused Therapy to help clients identify their strengths, recognize what is already working, and develop practical steps toward the changes they want to see. Rather than focusing only on the problem, we explore your goals, available resources, and small, achievable actions that can create meaningful progress. This approach helps clients build confidence, recognize their capabilities, and feel empowered to create positive change in their lives.

Psychoeducation

I use psychoeducation to help clients better understand their emotions, behaviors, relationship patterns, and mental health concerns. By providing clear and practical information, I help clients make sense of what they are experiencing and recognize how past experiences and learned patterns may influence their present lives. Understanding the “why” behind certain thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can reduce confusion and empower clients to make more intentional and informed changes.
