Hi, I'm Amy and am a Licensed Professional Counselor based in Atlanta, Georgia. I am so glad you are reaching out to care for yourself in this way! I work with adults across the lifespan who are feeling overwhelmed with life's current challenges. My expertise lies in treating the effects of religious trauma, grief, infertility challenges, anxiety, codependency, parenting overwhelm, and low self-esteem. I work with adults of all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, and sexualities, including nonconforming.
In our first session, clients will have an opportunity to tell me their story. In addition, we will talk about what they want to accomplish in therapy. Clients will also have an opportunity to ask me any questions that they have.
Experiences in my life have informed my counseling immensely which is one of my greatest strengths as a counselor. I have personal lived experience in all of my areas of specialty, which gives me a unique ability to empathize and understand my clients In addition, before becoming a counselor, I had a 20+ year career in the fashion apparel industry, which is valuable to my ability to relate to those with overwhelming careers or those struggling with balancing work/life/parenting. I also have received training and certification in Spiritual Direction for those seeking counseling for religious trauma or other support on their spiritual journey.
I love working with clients who are interested in learning more about themselves and ready to pursue a more meaningful life but feel stuck trying to do so. I have a keen interest in helping anyone who is on a spiritual journey, especially those who are beginning to realize that their previous religious beliefs no longer fit with the person they are now. In addition, I love working with anyone looking to dig deeper into their experiences, both past and present with the intention to heal past hurts and expose any blocks they are experiencing.
ACT is a treatment method that I incorporate into my practice often. It helps clarify values and teaches you how to make decisions that align with your values. It also helps you accept your thoughts and feelings without judgment by not getting to hooked by them, which reduces anxiety and depression. A major goal in ACT is to help create a meaningful life for each client.
I incorporate attachment theory in my practice, especially with regard to relationship issues that clients may discuss during sessions. Understanding attachment styles can be very helpful in understanding ourselves and our loved ones, particularly why we do the things we do in relationships.
Incorporating compassion is vital to my therapy sessions. I have learned that self-compassion is instrumental in individual and relationship growth as well as overall well-being. As Kristen Neff, an expert on self-compassion put it, "When we give ourselves compassion, we are opening our hearts in a way that can transform our lives."
Each one of my therapy sessions is person-centered, and this means that I believe each person is the expert on their own life, and we will work together to find clarity, build self-confidence and create solutions that feel right to you. I will provide a space where you are truly heard, accepted, and understood so that you can explore your thoughts and emotions in a nonjudgmental and warm environment.
Existential therapy is woven into my sessions when clients are asking big life questions or searching for meaning in their lives.
