My name is Joy Burgner. I have been licensed in California since 2011. Several life experiences have led me to adopt a completely nonjudgmental stance in treating clients, and my open-minded approach helps me form a strong therapeutic alliance. This creates a safe space where clients feel free to express, explore, and process the life events, thoughts, and feelings that have caused emotional distress.
I have spent the majority of my career treating adolescents in the juvenile justice system and teenagers in foster care who were placed in group homes. I also served on a mobile response team, assessing clients of all ages for homicide and suicide risk in a variety of settings. I earned a Master of Social Work (MSW) from California State University, Long Beach, and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

I have an eclectic approach to therapy, integrating evidence-based techniques that best fit your needs.
If you experience unplanned life events/changes, anxiety, depression, or stress disrupting your flow in life. Know that you're not alone and we'll take it on together. Be ready to learn, adapt, and grow your skills and resources to conquer all that life throws your way.
Lastly, I want to thank you for seeking therapy to enhance your mental health well-being. It's a difficult decision to open yourself up and accept help. I look forward to meeting you!
I’ve studied and practiced many methods. I like to be eclectic and work with you with what’s needed to get you back on track and feeling your best. I was a teacher for many years, then went for my masters in social work. Life has many twists and turns. Sometimes we can feel off balance or are suffering from depression or anxiety. We’ve all had our ups and downs and getting back on track and feeling our best is a goal I enjoy helping people achieve to live the life they want.

Hi, I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) based in California. I work with teens and young adults who feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or stuck in patterns that keep repeating—especially within family and relationship dynamics. I help clients understand what’s driving their reactions and build practical ways to manage emotions, communicate more effectively, and feel more in control in their daily lives and relationships.
Hello I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have been practicing in the field of Social Work for over 30 years. I have worked with many different people from a variety of cultures. I have helped both children, adolescents and adults with various concerns from criminal behaviors, addiction, and serious mental illness. I have helped people change their behavior and thinking so they can reach their potential, achieve their goals and heal emotionally, spiritually, and physically.
As a culturally competent therapist, I provide inclusive, affirming care for California residents seeking support in navigating life’s challenges. My approach is integrative and person-centered, blending evidence-based and experiential methods to honor each client’s unique story. I offer virtual sessions in English and Spanish, making therapy accessible and comfortable for clients from diverse backgrounds.
PLEASE NOTE: I am not currently taking on couples at this time.
For more than twenty years, I've sat with people at the edge of what they thought their lives could be — helping them break free from anxiety, depression, trauma, and the relationships and transitions that keep them circling the same painful ground. What I've learned in all those years is this: you are not broken. You are, more often than not, simply disconnected — from your own knowing, from what matters, from the quiet intelligence that has been trying to reach you all along.
My work weaves the science of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy with the ancient wisdom of Vedanta and mindfulness — traditions that have mapped the human heart for millennia. Together, they offer more than symptom relief. They offer a homecoming.
But there is a deeper current running beneath everything I do. My private practice includes shamanic work, animal communication, and soul-level intuitive channeling — ways of listening that reach beyond words, beyond technique, into the territory where real transformation lives. Clients often tell me they feel seen in a way they've never experienced: not just heard, but known.
This is not therapy as maintenance. This is therapy as awakening.
When you work with me, you get a guide who is fully present, deeply attuned, and grounded in something far older and larger than any single method — someone who trusts that your life is trying to become something, and knows how to help it get there.
Ready to stop coping and start living?
Let's talk.
Hello there, thanks for spending the time to get to know me as a Therapist.
I would like first to welcome you to this interesting journey of getting to know yourself deeply and possibly understand the world around you.
First, I explore you, the problem you are facing, your environment, and your past to understand better what is going on. So, be aware, I will take some time on that. I especially want you to feel heard and understood first, to be in the same page before we move on to the next step. I was told to be very approachable and easy to talk to, even when I point out inconsistencies for us to gain broader insight into your situation.
Over the years of experience, I have learned that each of my clients brings a different theory that needs to be treated case by case. I use several different approaches and orientations, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Bowen Therapy, and Structural Therapy among many others. I have been successful in bringing out the best of you once you find your personal goals and place in life.
Overall, I am open to your needs and preferences in treatment plan and interventions, as long as it brings you back to your functioning and high performance.

Love and work are essential to a meaningful life. Relationships with others define experience and work gives a sense of purpose. Disturbance in these affect well being and contribute to an overwhelmed response leading to collapse. As trauma is relational so is recovery and healing. Having the right therapeutic alliance is a key element and requires, attunement and constistency.

"Three friends were walking together one day, and one remarked, 'It's windy,' Another responded, 'No. It's Thursday.' Still the other answered, 'I'm thirsty, too. Let's have a cup of tea.'"
Is it that way for you sometime? Finding that you are not really being heard and understood?
