Aeryn Williams
You may be someone who looks like you have it together from the outside, but inside you’re tired, overwhelmed, anxious, or wondering why the things that used to work for you just aren’t working anymore. Maybe you’re the person everyone else depends on, and you’re not quite sure where you get to put your own stuff. I work especially well with adults navigating anxiety, burnout, trauma, major life transitions, relationship challenges, or simply trying to understand themselves better. Many of my clients are thoughtful, capable people who have already done a lot of reflecting but want help turning that insight into something that actually changes how life feels. I also work with a number of fellow therapists and helping professionals. At any given time, roughly 10% of my caseload is made up of clinicians who need a place where they do not have to be the therapist, supervisor, helper, or expert. They get to simply be the client. Another area I care deeply about is supporting women navigating perimenopause and the changes that can come with it. When your mood, energy, sleep, concentration, or sense of self suddenly feels different, it can be hard to know what belongs in the therapy room and what needs medical attention. I can help you sort through what you are experiencing, prepare for conversations with healthcare providers, and feel more confident advocating for your own health. You don’t need to come to therapy with the right words or a perfectly defined goal. We can start with what’s happening now and figure it out together. Note: I provide all services in a virtual setting.
First session
Our first session won't feel like counseling. In fact, it kind of feels like an interview. What I want you to feel from it is that I really see you. I hear you and that together we're creating a plan to move forward. Future sessions will be much more conversational and will include lots of validation as well as a lot of challenge.
Strengths
I am someone who approaches therapy very conversationally, which can mask the fact that I am consistently balancing the art and the science of what we do. The art is in the creative metaphors, and the approachable conversations. The science is in how rooted the work I do is in the study of psychology and I am always reading new research on what the latest science is telling us. I tell people there will be sessions that you love me and can't imagine someone knowing you better. There will be sessions where you don't like anything I have to say and never want to come back. Come back! Tell me. Maybe I messed up, maybe we weren't ready to go where we went, or maybe it was just a hard session. What we do is hard work, and I'm there to do it with you.
Ideal clients
Whether this is your first time in counseling or if you've been in it for years, whether your struggles are relational, internal or work focused, if you are someone who wants to be challenged and who is ready to take steps to make meaningful change in your life, we will probably be a good fit. I always have at least 10% of my case load as other therapists and am skilled at helping helpers navigate balancing their own life with their professional life. I also have many women experiencing perimenopause or sexual concerns that I work with.
Treatment methods
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Acceptance Commitment Therapy allows us to stop the endless cycle of fighting symtpoms and learning to balance accepting life as it is with action to make commited steps towards living in alignment with our values.
Brainspotting
I use both the traditional brainspotting as well as the partspotting work to help our nervous systems heal the disconnects that can occur from various experiences and traumas throughout life.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
At the heart of much of our struggle is the thoughts that build the story we tell ourselves. Using cognitive reframes in conjunction with behavioral change plans can have a huge influence on healing.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
I do not provide full DBT therapy and rather am DBT-informed though I've been trained and have facilitated DBT in the past. Currently, I use these skills to help assist navigating emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance.
Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is at the heart of what I do regardless of the modality I'm using. It allows me to ask meaningful questions, reflect for understanding and to meet each client exactly where they are in the change process.
