Hello, I'm Benjamin Cole, LPCC. I utilize an integration of psychodynamic therapy, along with other evidenced based treatments to enable clients to feel better, live life more fully, and gain emotional freedom. In my approach to treatment I emphasize emotional awareness, compassion, and the role of insight for growth and change. We'll work together to accomplish the goals that you want to set for treatment. so that you can alleviate your suffering and make the changes that you wish to see in your life.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session we'll gather information that will be the base for our treatment. We'll talk about your life experiences, what brings you to treatment, strengths and goals, and what a successful treatment would look like for you. In this session we'll also go over what you can expect from therapy and questions you may have about therapy.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Often clients have been in therapy before but are seeking a different way of working. With psychodynamic therapy we'll focus on what is outside of conscious awareness and integrate it for greater self-awareness. We'll explore impact of current and past relationships and ways in which our attempts to avoid pain may be contributing to suffering. This doesn't mean that therapy will be dry or overly abstract. We'll build a working relationship that focuses on the real, present moment. I welcome feedback and work to build an environment where clients feel able to share and be open during sessions.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am best able to help people who want to grow deeper in self-understanding and wish to make actionable changes in their lives. Frequently I help people who understand that therapy is a self-investment that continues to pay off long after therapy is over. Many people come to therapy knowing that something needs to change but are often unsure what that is. I help people see what it is they want from life, what current solutions they have available, and the ways in which they would like to change to realize these goals.

My treatment methods

Psychodynamic

Psychodynamic therapy is used to help alleviate suffering and gain greater understanding into problems that replaying across one's life. We'll examine relationships, current problems, family history, defense mechanisms, and feelings that arise during treatment to help both of us get a greater understanding of what is happening now and these things might be sustaining chronic problems across the lifespan.

Existential

Existential therapy helps the client to live fully in moment and to act in a way which is aligned with their values. So often, we live our lives for others, and it isn't until years later that we realize we aren't building the life that we want for ourselves. We'll examine this in therapy, as well as ways to act intentionally in one's life and to take responsibility for our decisions. We'll also explore the therapy relationship and how that may reflect larger problems/dynamics outside of therapy.

Jungian

With Jungian oriented approaches, the wholeness of the self is emphasized. We'll work together to analyze dreams, imagination, as well as thoughts and feelings to get an understanding of the deeper forces that are at work within you. Jungian therapy emphasizes the positive nature of the psyche and that we are all giving our best attempt to grow toward health and wholeness. Jungian therapy can also have a more spiritual dynamic to it for those who desire that in treatment.

Couples Counseling

In couples counseling we'll explore communication patterns, relationship dynamics, and systemic issues within the relationship which may be causing problems. Think of the couples counseling session as a lab for practicing new skills and finding new ways of relating to one another. We'll also discuss the context of the relationship and individual family history to greater understand where conflict arises and how it might be best resolved.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Using CBT, we'll examine thoughts, feelings, and behaviors the way that they interplay. This can be helpful for a variety of problems and CBT and can utilized in a broad range of applications.
