Hi there! I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing in California with 10 years of experience. I received my Master's Degree in Counseling from California State University, East Bay and my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from San Diego State University. Although my license may lead you to believe I primarily work with couples and families, I actually have a broad ranging background, working with children in schools, families at home, and adults ranging in age from 18 to 75 with a variety of struggles, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family conflict, managing anger, and more. Many of my clients have had a rough go at life so far, whether that's growing up in the foster care system, experiencing trauma, being involved in the justice system, going to the hospital involuntarily, or struggling with substance abuse. What drives my passion to help is giving people another chance at the life they want to lead and moving forward.
In our first session together, and likely even a couple more after that, I mainly am focusing on getting to know you. In this initial phase of therapy, I spend the time learning about you simply by having a conversation. I also understand that at the same time, you are getting to know me, so you are the one who sets the pace. While I am gathering information for what's typically known as an assessment, I tend to take a more casual approach, so that my clients can ease into the process.
I've noticed that often times when I initially start to work with a client, it can be hard to put into words what exactly they want help with. Sometimes we, as humans, know exactly what we are looking for, but a lot of times, we don't. One of my strengths is guiding people to identifying the root causes to their struggles. I place so much emphasis on this particular aspect because unless we know where it all starts, how can we know where to go from here? I've found that my clients are much more likely to make lasting changes that stick and ultimately lead to happier lives when we have a more accurate starting point.
Putting the labels aside, the clients I am best suited for are those who are looking for self-discovery, exploration and mastery. No matter what you have been through, what you have been diagnosed with, or what medications you might take, as long as you are ready to do the work to start peeling back some of your layers, we can absolutely work together. The journey to self is different for everyone, all you need to be is willing.
I truly believe that people are individual, unique, and like no other person. As such, I believe that not everyone fits into a specific method of psychotherapy, so I like to draw from different ideologies and utilize various techniques. By doing this, I'm more able to tailor therapy to best match the person in front of me, rather than having the person try to fit into a particular theoretical framework.
Along the same vein as my eclectic approach to therapy, I believe that each unique person is the expert of themselves. Only you truly know you. Using this person-centered approach allows you to practice and develop your expertise, which will in turn, allow you to gain better control and understanding of who you are.
One thing people I can say people share and the most common challenges in mental health and well-being are automatic thoughts and distortions in thinking. CBT not only allows you to explore your behaviors and feelings, but to uncover and identify the meaning you assign to things, whether accurate or sometimes inaccurate. Utilizing the CBT framework provides a structure to correct those automatic assumptions that can lead to challenging feelings and reactions.
Emotional intelligence in life is key. Self-exploration and understanding is key. EFT fits well into my overall therapeutic approach because it emphasizes the focus on emotions specifically. This ideology provides guidance to better understanding and managing emotions, which can lead to less distress and more control over how you move through life.
Another area of expertise is working with those who have been in the past or are involved in the criminal justice system.
