New to Grow
Hi, I'm Susan Sabogal, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor providing therapy in English and Spanish. I work with adults who are tired of carrying everyone else's expectations, second-guessing themselves, and feeling guilty for having needs of their own. My style is warm, practical, and straightforward. I'm not interested in spending months talking about problems without helping you move forward. Together, we'll connect the dots between your past experiences, current challenges, and the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. My goal is to help you better understand yourself, build confidence in your decisions, develop healthier boundaries, and create meaningful change that lasts.
Our first session is a chance for me to understand what’s bringing you to therapy, what’s feeling difficult right now, and what you want to be different in your life. We'll explore your current concerns, important experiences that may be influencing them, and any patterns that seem to keep showing up despite your best efforts to change them. I see therapy as a collaborative process, so you're welcome to ask questions and share what has or hasn't worked for you in the past. You don't need to have everything figured out before you start. My goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable being honest, gain a deeper understanding of what's going on beneath the surface, and leave with a clearer sense of direction for the work ahead.
I don't believe effective therapy comes from forcing every client into the same treatment model. One of my strengths is adapting therapy to fit the person sitting in front of me. I consider your personality, goals, cultural background, family experiences, values, and beliefs when developing a treatment approach that feels both effective and authentic to you. As a bilingual therapist with a bicultural background, I understand that culture, family expectations, immigration experiences, identity, and faith can play a significant role in how we view ourselves, our relationships, and the challenges we face. For clients who wish to incorporate their religious or spiritual beliefs into therapy, I am happy to integrate those values into our work in a way that supports their goals. I combine evidence-based therapies with practical tools and a direct, collaborative style. My goal is not only to help you understand why certain patterns exist, but also to help you develop the skills, confidence, and self-trust needed to create meaningful and lasting change.
I work best with adults who are exhausted from being the strong one, the responsible one, or the person everyone relies on. Many of my clients struggle with anxiety, overthinking, people-pleasing, perfectionism, self-doubt, and the feeling that no matter how much they do, it's never enough. I especially enjoy working with professionals, caregivers, immigrants, first-generation and bicultural individuals who are navigating family expectations, cultural pressures, major life transitions, or the challenge of balancing who they are with who others expect them to be. Many have spent years putting themselves last and find it difficult to set boundaries without guilt or prioritize their own needs. My clients are often highly self-aware and motivated for change, but they feel stuck repeating the same emotional and relationship patterns. Together, we connect the dots between past experiences and present struggles, build practical tools for change, and create a path forward that feels more aligned with their values, goals, and authentic sense of self.
Other specialties
I identify as
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Many of my clients know what they should do but find themselves stuck in the same patterns anyway. CBT helps us identify the thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions that may be fueling anxiety, self-doubt, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or feeling responsible for everyone else's emotions. Together, we'll challenge unhelpful patterns and develop practical tools that help you respond differently so you can feel more confident, grounded, and in control of your life.
Acceptance and commitment (ACT)
Life doesn't suddenly become easier when anxiety disappears. In fact, many people spend years waiting to feel completely confident, certain, or ready before making changes. ACT helps you stop putting your life on hold while you wait for fear, guilt, or self-doubt to go away. We'll work on building psychological flexibility so you can make decisions based on your values and goals rather than your fears. This approach is especially helpful for people who feel stuck, overthink everything, or struggle with self-criticism.
Trauma-Focused CBT
Sometimes the reactions that frustrate you most make perfect sense when you understand where they came from. Whether you've experienced significant trauma, chronic stress, difficult relationships, cultural pressures, or years of putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own, your nervous system may still be responding as if those old situations are happening today. I help clients understand the connection between past experiences, present-day patterns, and the body's stress responses so they can stop surviving and start living with greater freedom, confidence, and self-trust.
Culturally Sensitive Therapy
Many of the clients I work with have spent years feeling caught between different expectations, roles, or cultures. They may be immigrants, children of immigrants, professionals balancing family obligations, or people trying to figure out who they are outside of what others expect from them. Together, we'll explore how culture, family dynamics, identity, and life experiences have shaped the patterns you find yourself repeating today. We'll honor the values and strengths you want to keep while making room for healthier boundaries, greater self-trust, and a life that feels more authentic to who you are.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
While understanding the past can be important, I also believe in helping clients move forward. Solution-Focused Therapy helps us identify what's already working, build on your strengths, and create realistic steps toward the life you want. If you're tired of feeling stuck in the same problems and want practical strategies you can start using now, this approach can help you make meaningful progress without feeling overwhelmed.
