In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Your initial session focuses on gathering background information and developing a clear understanding of your current stressors and goals for treatment. This first meeting provides space to discuss concerns such as current symptoms, work and life stressors, family history and dynamics, and other relevant life experiences. If you have questions or concerns about the therapy process, differences between types of therapies, diagnosis process, or expectations, this is an appropriate time to address them.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Therapy with Shannon is collaborative and goal-oriented. She integrates evidence-informed practices such as behavioral activation, strengths identification, adaptability skills, and solution-focused goal setting to support improved daily functioning. Treatment focuses on helping clients better understand their stress responses, build on existing strengths, and work toward practical goals that enhance overall wellbeing. Prior to becoming a counselor, Shannon worked for 17 years in civilian roles within law enforcement in North Central Minnesota. This professional background gives her a strong clinical understanding of the unique occupational and family stressors faced by first responders and those working in public safety and criminal justice. Her work is informed by firsthand knowledge of cumulative trauma, secondary and vicarious trauma, moral injury, and the long-term impact of high-stress careers. Shannon’s practice is grounded in respect for these communities and a commitment to providing culturally responsive, effective mental health care.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

Shannon focuses on therapeutic interventions and wellness to improve quality of life. Through the healing process, focus is centered on mental health in a safe and supportive environment that encompasses a holistic model of practice. Shannon believes in supporting individuals working in the first responder communities, who often feel like the weight of the earth and sky is on their shoulders. Through appropriate therapeutic services, we can work together to lighten the load that comes from working in the public safety profession.

My treatment methods

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy that helps people process and heal from traumatic or distressing memories. Using guided eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, EMDR reduces emotional intensity, promotes adaptive thinking, and supports lasting relief from symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)

Exposure and Response Prevention (Ex/RP) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy for OCD. It involves gradually confronting feared thoughts, situations, or triggers while resisting compulsive behaviors. Over time, this reduces anxiety, breaks the obsession-compulsion cycle, and helps individuals regain control over their lives with healthier coping strategies.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured form of talk therapy that focuses on changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors to improve mental health. It is effective for various conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. CBT typically involves regular sessions with a therapist, where patients learn to identify and challenge negative thoughts, develop coping strategies, and practice problem-solving skills. The therapy is goal-oriented and emphasizes practical skills to manage challenges and enhance overall well-being.

Relational

Relational-Cultural Therapy (RCT) focuses on healing through connection, mutual empathy, and empowerment. It emphasizes that growth occurs in healthy, supportive relationships, addressing disconnection as a source of emotional distress. RCT values cultural context, authenticity, and collaboration, helping individuals build stronger, more fulfilling connections with themselves and others.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a goal-oriented therapeutic approach that emphasizes clients' strengths and resources to create positive change. It focuses on present and future goals rather than past problems, encouraging clients to articulate a preferred future and leverage their strengths to achieve it. SFBT is brief, collaborative, and empowers clients to discover and implement solutions to their problems, promoting a forward-thinking approach to therapy. The therapist's role is to help clients identify their desired outcomes and develop practical strategies to achieve them, rather than delving into the past or analyzing issues deeply
