LMHC, 5 years of experience
New to Grow
Aloha, my name is Amanda Makio, I have been a resident on Hawaii Island since 2014 serving the community in a variety of counseling and advocacy positions. I have worked with teens who struggled with traditional school and justice involvement as well as their families. My experience is with underserved populations including foster youth, incarcerated women, sexual assault survivors and victims of crime. I am currently getting back into individual counseling after years of support group facilitation and victim offender conferencing. I have a wide range of experience and passion that I hope can assist clients navigate their counseling journey.
First session will likely be a "talk story", getting to know you as a whole person. Having opportunities to ask me questions and see if it's the right fit for you. However, if you are motivated to jump in I never mind a goal oriented session focused on a specific issue.
My passion. I have been told that my passion to help others and my community keeps me focused up to date with current approaches and therapeutic interventions. I am a data nerd! I love being able to track progress and show clients how methods are working or what methods we know we can leave behind.
I am best suited for clients that are seeking help. I find that taking the step to speak to someone already is half the battle of finding solutions. However I feel that I have a wide array of experience to help with folks who are struggling to find motivation to help themselves as well.
My experience with this modality, is working with victims of sexual assault and human trafficking. Narrative therapy and exposure therapy are just some of the tools I have experience with in this field. I also used Parent Child Interaction therapy for preschoolers who had been exposed to trauma at home.
I have had a few years of experience in couples counseling utilizing Gottman and strength based practices.
I have facilitated group therapy in a variety of settings and populations including Anger Management, Greif, and Sexual Assault Survivors
Throughout my experience I have utilized multiple modalities to serve each individual client's needs.
I have experience as a licensed MHC and yoga instructor; Facilitating Mind Body support groups with female inmates in prison settings.
