Taryn Fledderman

LCSW (they/them)12 years of experience

The framework of my practice prioritizes the values of liberation psychology which focuses on the idea that we are all individuals living within larger systems that also are sources of our distress. This inherently means this is not a politically-neutral therapy space as the policies of the governmental system are precursors to the distress that many folks within marginalized communities experience on a day to day basis. Liberation psychology at it’s core shares that no system is going to grant us the permission to be free, and that it is our community that will guide us to freely navigate the world. That is why I am choosing to focus on working with members of the LGBTQ+ community (ages 16-30) as a queer elder clinician. I have an eclectic approach to my practice, which means I work with folks with a variety of needs and pull from a variety of evidence-based and expressive therapy practices. I typically identify interventions based on client needs in the session and generally don’t utilize standardized sole frameworks.

LGBTQ+ affirming therapy with a queer elder!

I acknowledge the privilege I carry as a white person and the presence of implicit bias. I aim to be self-aware enough to know I make mistakes and don’t know everything. I acknowledge that I have lived and practiced on the on the ancestral lands of Indigenous Peoples from time immemorial who have always valued gender diversity. Indiana is the traditional lands of Potawatomi, Illini, Myaamia, Kickapoo, Lenni Lenape, Wea, Piankashaw, Shaawana, Nanticoke, and Wyandot. Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky the homelands of the Cherokee, Lenni Lenape/Delaware, Hopi, Chickasaw, Shaawana, Myaamia, Iroquois, Choctaw & Osage Nations. Seattle the home of the Coast Salish tribes (Duwamish, Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot Nations.)

First session

The first session is a time for us to get to know each other, figure out what brought you in, and what you're hoping to accomplish in therapy. For minors, I ask that parents be present in the initial appointment to help fill in the gaps on some background and explore supports/resources for any acute needs that present in session.

Strengths

I oppose all forms of oppression. Am anti-racist and xenophobic, fiercely pro- LGBTQIA+, anti-ableist and agist, pro- immigration, sex positive, believe all bodies can be healthy and all relationship models have value.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is looking for queer affirming virtual therapy and is between the ages of 16-30. Therapy is a commitment to yourself to have an hour of time for yourself to process the world on a regular basis and you are open to the discomfort of growth, change, and acceptance. I'm especially interested in working with folks who may struggle to connect with queer affirming services in their area whether that be due to geographic or other barriers.
