Hello! I'm Dr. Edwards, a dedicated psychologist based in Houston, Texas. My journey into psychology began amidst the scenic views of the Texas Hill Country, where I was born and raised. My passion for understanding the human mind led me to The University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in psychology. Driven to deepen my knowledge and expertise, I pursued and earned my Ph.D. in Clinical Health Psychology from The University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton. Pursuing excellence then took me to Syracuse, NY, where I braved one of the coldest years of my life to complete my pre-doctoral internship at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. However, the heart of Texas and the opportunity for a post-doctoral fellowship at The Menninger Clinic, an esteemed affiliate of The Baylor College of Medicine, called me back to Houston, which has warmly remained my home.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

In your first session with me, you can anticipate an environment rooted in compassion, respect, and confidentiality, where your unique story is honored and your pace is paramount. Our initial meeting is designed around a person-centered and individualized approach, emphasizing the establishment of trust and safety. You are encouraged to share as much of your story as you feel comfortable, with no pressure to disclose more than what feels right for you. Recognizing the profound impact of trauma on the body and mind, we will also introduce elements of somatic experiencing early on. This approach will provide you with practical tools to begin processing stress and fostering stability in your life. My aim is to make this first session a foundational step towards healing, where you feel seen, heard, and supported in your journey towards recovery. Together, we will start to lay the groundwork for a therapeutic process that respects your individuality and works towards your empowerment and well-being.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

My biggest strength is helping clients feel understood, creating a safe space where no thought, action, or emotion is off the table.

Attachment-based

In my professional journey, I have had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of attachment-based therapy through targeted training at The Menninger Clinic, which has significantly enriched my therapeutic practice. This experience, coupled with my involvement in attachment consultations, has afforded me a nuanced appreciation of the complexities inherent in attachment issues, enhancing my ability to support clients through their healing processes.

Psychodynamic

Through my training and experience in psychodynamic therapy, including comprehensive coursework and clinical practice, I have developed a profound insight into the intricacies of unconscious processes and their impact on behavior. This journey has been pivotal in shaping my approach to therapy, enabling me to foster a deeper, more reflective therapeutic environment for my clients, guiding them towards self-awareness and change.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

My exposure to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been transformative, equipping me with a robust set of skills to effectively address and modify maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors. This foundation was further solidified through practical applications and ongoing learning, empowering me to facilitate meaningful behavioral change and resilience in my clients.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

Incorporating elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) into my practice, I have embraced its core principles to enhance emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness among my clients. This integration involves applying DBT's mindfulness strategies and distress tolerance techniques, which has proven instrumental in guiding individuals towards greater self-awareness and healthier coping mechanisms.
