About me

Hello! My name is Trevor Sowders, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) dedicated to helping adults navigate life’s challenges with clarity and confidence. I’ve had the privilege of working with people from many walks of life, providing treatment for a wide range of mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, PTSD, panic disorder, and life transitions. My approach is flexible and collaborative—I tailor each session to your unique needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. I began my career studying neuroscience but soon realized I wanted to work directly with people rather than the lab’s “less talkative” test subjects. That curiosity about how the brain works now informs my therapy practice, where I combine science-based approaches with empathy and practicality. I’m trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Whether you’re processing trauma, managing anxiety, or working through a major life transition, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move toward growth and balance—all while staying grounded, approachable, and respectful of your values, culture, and beliefs.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In our first session, we’ll take time to understand your story and what brought you to therapy. I’ll ask questions to get to know you as a whole person—your experiences, family, background, and hopes for the future. Many clients come to me feeling stuck or unsure where to begin, and by the end of our first meeting, they often leave feeling more hopeful, informed, and motivated to take the next step. My goal is to make therapy a safe and collaborative space where we work together to find what truly helps you move forward.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

I balance professionalism with a down-to-earth, relatable style. My clients appreciate that I explain concepts clearly, without unnecessary jargon, and that I’m flexible in adapting techniques that best suit their needs. I’m supportive but also willing to challenge you when it helps promote growth. My goal is to build trust and foster a strong partnership where you feel heard, respected, and encouraged to reach your goals.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I specialize in working with adults who may have tried therapy before and are looking for a new, more personalized approach. I’m particularly experienced in helping clients navigate grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and major identity changes. I welcome clients from all walks of life and take pride in creating a respectful, inclusive space for people of all backgrounds, including the LGBTQ+ community, military service members, and those facing discrimination or change. If you’re ready to explore what’s been keeping you stuck, I’m here to help you find clarity, confidence, and lasting relief.

My treatment methods

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

This is the primary base behind my practice. By helping clients build mindfulness and acceptance, understand values, and increase committed action, not only do symptoms begin to improve but general wellness begins to be achieved.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Understanding the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behavior is critical to address the underlying core beliefs that lead to anxiety, depression, and many other mental health concerns.

Cognitive Processing (CPT)

I have utilized CPT with many people experience chronic stress and PTSD and feel confident that I can help my clients understand and recover from trauma.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is the gold standard treatment for OCD and can be used for the treatment of phobias as well. I have helped many of my clients improve their lives by managing their OCD symptoms.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is another technique that can be and should be implemented for any client looking to change and motivate themselves to make those changes. I have been trained in motivational interviewing and have used it to great success throughout my career.
