Dwight Hughes
I am a spiritually integrated psychotherapist who holds a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling from Wesley Theological Seminary. I work with individuals and couples who seek a holistic approach to mental wellness and work-life balance.
You are of sacred worth, with the capacity for healing, growth, and deeper connection.
The philosophy of my practice - Deep Essentials Counseling Service is rooted in the belief that every individual is of sacred worth and embodies an innate capacity for healing, growth and fulfilling relationships.
First session
In our first session, we will briefly review key policies, clarify what brings you to therapy, and identify what you hope to gain from our work together. You do not need to come prepared with the right words or know where to begin. My role is to provide structure, guidance, and a comfortable pace so that you can simply show up and engage as you are ready. Together, we will establish a regular meeting time that works with your schedule and keep our work focused on the goals and concerns that matter most to you.
Strengths
Growing up in a military family meant frequent moves and early exposure to people from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds, and lived experiences. My own journey, including experiences in corporate and church settings and my lived experience as an African American man, has deepened my appreciation for the many factors that shape how we understand ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. In therapy, I attune to each client’s temperament, pace, and lived experience so our work feels relevant, respectful, and purposeful. I also offer reflection questions and practical psychoeducation between sessions to help clients deepen what we are exploring and prepare for the next steps in our work together.
Ideal clients
My ideal clients are individuals and couples who are ready to engage in the work of therapy, even if they feel uncertain or apprehensive about the process. They understand that meaningful change often continues beyond the counseling session and are willing to reflect, practice, and explore between sessions. I especially enjoy working with those navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, infidelity, or betrayal trauma. My approach is holistic, honoring the connection between mind, body, relationships, and spirit, while respecting each person’s beliefs, values, and lived experience.
Origin story
While serving as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, I pursued a doctorate in pastoral counseling to deepen my ability to walk alongside people through life’s challenges. As part of that journey, I completed an internship in a counseling center and discovered a deep sense of calling to the therapeutic relationship. That experience ultimately led me from the local church into counseling and, eventually, private practice. I continue to be drawn to the power of the person-to-person encounter and the meaningful change that can emerge when people feel truly seen, heard, and understood.
Ongoing work together
Our ongoing sessions will typically begin with a brief check-in about recent developments, followed by a review of insights or reflections from our previous work. From there, we will continue working toward the goals we have identified together. Our work may involve noticing patterns, processing emotions, renewing beliefs, and practicing new ways of responding both in and between sessions. Progress can take many forms, including deeper self-awareness, shifts in thinking, a greater ability to manage anxiety or distress, healthier communication, and learning to soothe and care for yourself during difficult moments.
Treatment methods
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
My approach is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) while integrating family systems theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy as appropriate. Rather than applying one method to every client, I consider your goals, experiences, temperament, and pace. Our work may involve noticing patterns, processing emotions, renewing beliefs, and practicing new ways of responding that support greater emotional and relational well-being.
