Christopher (Chris) Cowper
Welcome - and thank you for being here. Taking the step to invest in your relationship is a meaningful decision, and you've come to the right place. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I successfully help couples build stronger, healthier, and more fulfilling relationships. Whether you're navigating specific challenges or simply wanting to deepen your connection, my role is to guide you with clarity, compassion, and evidenced-based practices. A satisfying romantic relationship certainly feels good - but research also shows that strong, healthy partnerships are linked to better overall health, lower mortality risk, and greater life satisfaction. Through online sessions, couples can participate in the Relationship Checkup, a clinically proven approach in which 90% of couples report an immediate positive impact within just two sessions. As a certified Relationship Checkup provider, I offer the Arammu (ah-RAH-moo, the oldest written word for love) Relationship Checkup (arammu.com). It is the only evidenced-based Relationship Checkup trusted by the U.S. military. The Oprah Magazine famously referred to it as the "Divorce Vaccine." I have successfully implemented this protocol with over 177 couples in the past 4 years, helping partners move from communication breakdowns, trust concerns, or emotional disconnection toward greater confidence, peace, laughter, and passionate connection. While no relationship approach can guarantee outcomes, research shows that relationship checkups are associated with reduced rates of depression, divorce, intimate partner violence, and suicidal risk factors. My mission is to serve couples who are likely to benefit from effective, short-term relational therapy. For concerns that require longer-term or specialized care - such as ongoing or hidden infidelity, addiction, serious and persistent mental health disorders, or domestic abuse or violence - I provide appropriate referrals to ensure you receive the best support suited to your needs. I look forward to partnering with you on this important journey.
First session
RATES - Consultation: 15-minute phone or video call FREE to discuss your desired outcome from our meeting, answer any questions, and determine if we are a good fit. Therapy: $220/hr ($330/90-minute session). In our first session, we'll start with introductions and address any questions you have. With the Arammu Checkup (arammu.com), I request couples commit to TWO 90-minute sessions. Here's how it works: Step #1: Schedule an appointment with me and complete some brief (10 minutes) questionnaires prior to your first session. I want to know a bit about your relationship; the challenges you're facing and the things that are going well. Step #2: Meet virtually with me as a couple for the First Session where you'll dive into the history of your relationship, its strengths, and the areas you'd like to see improved. Step #3: I will send you your Personalized Relationship Report, where you'll learn about ways to improve your relationship. With virtual therapy, you can easily review and implement the recommendations in session in your natural home environment in addition to putting these recommendations into practice on your own throughout the year. Step #4: If desired, continue to meet with me after the initial two sessions for ongoing couples therapy in 60-minute or 90-minute sessions. Most couples will benefit from brief follow up sessions, including an annual Relationship Checkup. Relationships naturally move through different stages and challenges over time. Addressing concerns early - before they grow into crises - creates clarity, connection, and lasting momentum. We use your relationship report to launch our work together and create a customized plan for meaningful progress. In addition to couples therapy, I offer individual relational therapy if: 1) Your partner is not ready or willing to participate 2) You want to "work on myself first" 3) You need support navigating separation, divorce, or healing after a relationship has ended.
Strengths
I provide short-term couples therapy virtually throughout California, with evening and weekend availability. I have mastered the Arammu Relationship Checkup protocol, guiding over 177 couples in the past four years. The model has supported more than 24,000 couples worldwide and has been featured on the Rachel Ray Show, CNN, The New York Times, O The Oprah Magazine, and USA Today. The strength - and solution - focused approach (rather than traditional problem-focused therapy) helps couples rediscover what's working - and build from there. What would it mean for you and your partner to feel relaxed, understood, and free to be your true selves together?
Ideal clients
Many therapists focus on longer-term treatment. My work emphasizes brief, evidenced-based, strength focused relational therapy. Most couples do not need years of therapy- they need clarity, tools, and a structured focus on solutions. My clients are often busy professionals who value efficiency. They appreciate investing in a once-a-year, two-session Relationship Checkup, with the option to schedule additional sessions as needed. My ideal couples work as a team. They implement what we discuss between sessions and continue practicing relationship check-ins throughout the year - strengthening their connection the way you would strengthen a muscle. When couples consistently apply what they learn, they experience the rewards of their investment: greater intimacy, more peace and emotional safety, renewed passion, deeper confidence in the relationship, and more laughter, joy, and connection.
